Less Precursors
This mod eliminates the precursor javelins from the vast majority of infantry units in the game. Cavalry, Roman infantry, and units such as Greek Thureos Spears still have them.
This mod also makes pila function like the javelins thrown by Thureos Spears. You can now order Legionaries to focus fire on an enemy. If you prefer to not micromanage your pila then you can still set your units to fire at will and they will engage automatically just like vanilla. The only difference being they no longer throw while charging, you will now have to stay stationary untill they have thrown their pila and counter charge at the last second.
The benefit of this mod is that now javelin throwers really stand apart from other infantry. In vanilla, javelin throwers were similar to regular infantry except they sucked but had more ammo. Now that your melee infantry no longer have the ability to throw javelins at charging cavalry or elephants it makes sense to bring supporting skirmisher units. Units that are good at melee and can throw javelins now feel more elite.
Another benefit is that cavalry now have the ability to engage with infantry without being decimated by a million spears. On the other hand, infantry are more likely to be braced against cav charges because they arn’t fumbling in their pockets for 6 ft spears (In case you didn’t know units do not recieve their max bracing bonus if they are targeting with precursors).
Incompatibilities:
This mod edits the land units table so it conflicts with anything that changes units. Mods that add new units might be compatable if they don’t overide the vanilla units.
This mod goes great with my "Realistic Missiles" mod as that mod changes the distance precursors can be thrown and increases reload speed allowing two full volleys of pila before contact.
