GWR 517 Class & 14XX Class ‘Autotank’
In the 1860s, George Armstrong of the GWR designed an 0-4-2T locomotive for the Standard Gauge portions of the GWR network. The 517 Class was intended for light and speedy passenger work, primarily on branch lines and mainline stopping services.
The design was very successful, and in 1932, the design was re-imagined in the GWR Autotank, better known as the 14XX series (initially the 4800s).
The name Autotank comes from the fact these locomotives were fitted with autotrain equipment to allow for push/pull services on branch lines without the need to run the loco around.
