This mod makes a few minor changes to Laudanum:
– (Unchanged from base game) Can be used to remove Horror.
– Can now also be consumed even if you are not affected by Horror.
– Heals 5 points of stress damage per bottle* (see note below).
– Its price has been increased from 100 gold to 150 gold.
– Its description tooltip has been updated.

* Note regarding consumption spamming:
– You can spam all bottles on one character if you are desperate for some stress healing, but if you get into this habit you won’t have any left for when you do get Horror and need to cure it. Drink responsibly.
– If you build the Tainted Well district from the DLC, you can’t spam it anymore, see why below.

Tainted Well district:
The mod should work with and without the Color of Madness DLC. This DLC allows you to build the Tainted Well district, which adds an additional -40% Stress buff for 3 rounds when you consume Laudanum. This hasn’t changed, but I added the additional 5 points of stress healing. If you do build the district, do know that you will no longer be able to spam laudanum consumption until the 3 rounds for the stress buff have passed, I believe this is a vanilla effect but I didn’t want to change this because I think it balances the benefits quite nicely, otherwise you would be able to spam stress buffs for an insame amount, -40% stress is already a VERY good buff so that should protect your character quite a bit until he/she can take a second dose.

Why I made this

I made this mostly for myself but I wanted to share it with others that want to use it.

The reasoning behind it is this: Laudanum is one of those items that I think most people rarely buy or even consider taking at all with them when going on a quest (with a few exceptional situations). I wanted to give it a bit more use without unbalancing the item too much. Stress is a huge part of the game, so anything changing it must be considered carefully. In part, this is why I gave Laudanum such a tiny amount of stress healing, and I also didn’t want to make positive quirks that protect you from stress or camp skills that cure stress seem superfluous compared to Laudanum.

The price increase also reflects a bit of rebalance for the item, after you get enough money and the Bank district, gold is pretty much not an issue, on the other hand, by that time your stress healing skills and your choice of quirks may also protect you a bit more from stress, so buying Laudanum plays a bigger role during early to mid game in which you aren’t rich, but you could certainly use some additonal sources of stress healing, particularly for key moments in which enemies focus their stress attacks on one of your characters to make it afflicted.

By the end game, 5 stress healing per bottle may not seem much, but if you manage to get enough Shards to build the Tainted Well district the -40% Stress buff you get will be more meaningful for short bursts of protection, and with this mod you can make use of that buff whenever you want instead of waiting to be affected by Horror effect (in the base game you can’t ‘consume’ Laudanum unless you have Horror first), but it only lasts for 3 rounds and you won’t be able to spam laudanum consumption anymore, so I think it’s an interesting tradeoff.
