Infantry AI Fix – MOWAS 2 Style Behaviour
This mod contains a few simple edits that remove the new walking fire feature from infantry weapons. This feature from CtA is not properly implemented, and breaks the ‘Move at Will’ stance.
In previous MOW games, infantry in Move at Will mode would stop moving, return fire and disperse to cover when engaged with the enemy. In CtA and GoH, the walking fire feature leads to infantry simply continuing to walk forward through enemy fire.
This bug greatly increases the amount of micromanagement players must perform in order to remain effective, particularly in larger or combined arms battles. This also greatly handicaps the AI, which relies on the Move at Will logic to react to the players actions. As Move at Will doesn’t kick in until the current move order has been completed, this leads to the bugs, especially noticeable in conquest, where enemy AI’s infantry will not react to being fired upon at all if not near a cap zone.
As the videos show, the change slows down infantry combat, and gives the infantry a sense of self preservation, enhancing the realism. From a gameplay perspective, this allows players to involve infantry more in offensives without having to micromanage them to keep them in cover or prevent them from rushing ahead of the tanks or other support elements.
In my testing, removing this glitched feature also appears to make infantry more reactive to the presence of tanks. I’m not 100% sure why that is, but it appears this should also fix the issue in GoH where tanks can steam roll infantry and the infantry often won’t even make an attempt to use their AT weapons and grenades. AI infantry is always in Move At Will mode, and so far as I’ve seen, removing walking fire has fixed every infantry behaviour bug introduced in GoH that wasn’t present in MOWAS 2, at least so far as I’m aware.
The fire while moving mechanic is a neat feature in concept. However, in its current implementation, it completely cripples fundamental infantry functionality, and in my view is nowhere near worth it.
This mod may conflict with other modifications that edit the pattern files of small arms.
