Description:

In November of 1884, the keel of the SS Trent was laid. Intended to enter service in 1886, she suffered issues during construction. The company that built her and her sister ship went bankrupt while framing the keels. They sat there idle until 1887, where a new company finished the 2 keels. They were finished only a year after intended, the Trent being completed in June of 1888, and sailing on her maiden voyage in July of that year. She was joined on this run by her sister, SS Clyde 2 in April of 1889. Both ships had reliable service until 1907. In November of 1907, the SS Clyde was laid up for the winter season, when gas built up in her cargo hold. After hours of going unnoticed, an explosion was heard and smoke billowed out from her cargo hold. A large fire rapidly spread across the vessel, but thankfully was put out before disabling the ship. Given her old age, she was not repaired and she was scrapped the next month. Her older sister, SS Trent, continued service alone until 1914 when she was requisitioned for war service. The ship performed well, and collided once with a dock in June of 1916, but survived the war. She was used to replace the loss of another River Liner for a few years, before being rendered useless in 1923. The old ship was sold to the breakers and was scrapped on the Mersey in April of 1923.
