WL-11 Batavus
CONCEPT:
The WL-11 Batavus (fictional) shares a larger version of the WL-08 Atlantida. It has the same weapons as the Atlantida, and slightly larger. The weapons on the Atlantida was considered primitive, it has a tank turret. But tank turret was not compatible for a naval ship, due to aerodynamic disturbance. The weapons mounted on the Batavus, was that from the airship Aristarchus, the Aristarchus has a more advanced gun than the Atlantida. The Batavus was considered to be a corvette due to its relatively small size.
The Batavus has 2 gun turrets, 2 cruise missiles that was once mounted on the Atlantida, quad torpedoes, and 2 CIWS phalanx. The Batavus main purpose are general. A general combat ship. Due to its larger size, the Batavus realistically could be a part of a carrier strike group, and could be a part of a greater operation than her older sisters.
BUILDING TECHNIQUES:
The ship was firstly resemble a British destroyer, the bow was made pre-fabricated for another British ship that was requested. Due to cancellations, the bow should be recycled to another vessel, the same fate as the turrets. Because of its resemblance of a British destroyer, the bridge was made British as well. By using HMS King George V reference pictures, I could replicate British ship style.
After knowing that the French used to have a more advanced naval ships than German and the British during the WW2, I decided to copy the French building style. The French are known to have a dragon breath firepower, their racing speed and the elegant aesthetic appearance of their ships, I started to imitate their ships.
After searching through the workshop, I noticed that the steering hinge turret method is a trend, nobody uses the old wheel anymore for turrets. I think it becomes a standard of turret building, due to its balance. After doing all the weaponry, I realized that some weapons stuck at the game’s hitbox. Yes, the Batavus used to have a third gun turret at the stern, it was removed and become an anti-air deck, due to hitbox collision.
One of the unique features of the Batavus is the ballast at the bottom. Most ships today does not have that, but in some ships mainly in service and hydrofoils, they do use it. The ballast’s function was to add weight, pulling the ship downwards. It prevents the ship from capsizing. This is one way to stabilize the ship without always using balloons. The Batavus still uses balloons to stabilize, but the bottom ballast keel plays its role as well.
As you may see in the screenshots, there’s a star on the bow. This star is not in the ship for now, because I plan to make a skinpack that contains decorative elements especially for naval and air ships.
