About

The MD-80 series, the successor of the DC-9 is a narrow-body single-aisle airplane that can carry a maximum of 172 passengers approximately 2,900 miles, the MD-80 with its iconic T-tail design, rear-mounted engines, and non-proportional wings set it apart from other modern airliners. The MD-80 was a workhorse for airlines and was the backbone for many airlines. Unfortunately, though it is disappearing among airlines due to its inefficient Pratt & Whitney JT8D engines, despite that nearly 2,000 units were sold from 1979–1999, most airlines are retiring there MD-80’s. Delta Airlines, operates the most MD-80s and is believed to be accelerating the retirement of the aircraft, although not publicly disclosed, to solve the fuel efficiency McDonnell Douglas re-engined the plane with two IAE V2500 engines which are also available on the Airbus A320 series, but this did not work, production as a result only lasted from 1993–2000 and only 116 units were produced. In 1997 though McDonnell Douglas and Boeing merged, there for the next version of the MD-90, originally, the MD-95 a lengthened DC-9 with new avionics and Rolls Royce BR700 engines was renamed to the 717 to better suit Boeing’s portfolio, although not an instantaneous success it would later become a huge success due to its small quantity of seats which was required in order to serve low-demand routes. Unfortunately, from 1998-2006 only 156 were ever built Delta operates approximately 60% of all 717s ever manufactured.
