Description:

The He 177 Greif was a German heavy bomber. It was the Luftwaffe’s only long range heavy bomber capable of matching the performance of American heavy bombers, and was intended for use against the Soviet Union. Although it appears to have only 2 engines, each nacelle housed two engines, who’s combined force drove massive 4 bladed propellors. Its bomb bay was divided into 3 sections, which could be individually replaced with hard points for various guided bombs, such as the Hs 293, which could also be mounted under the wings. Over 1000 of these were built, and it saw service mostly in the Eastern front, with only some use in the West. Plagued by problems, the Greif proved to not be very effective, especially compared to the He 111. Eventually, it was pushed out of service in favor of other programs.
