Steamboat Far West 1870
Steam Packet – Far West (Spring,1870 – October, 1883)
Backstory (True)
The steamboat Far West was launched in the spring of 1870, for the Coulson Packet Company.
In its early years the Far West was used on the upper Missouri and Yellowstone river, running supply trips to Fort Benton, Montana regularly. The Far West was well known for her speed, breaking the record for he fastest time from Sioux City, Iowa to Fort Benton, Montana.
In 1876 the Far West would enter military service, as it was contracted to the United States Army as the supply ship for the Custer/Terry military expedition against the Sioux Indians. The Far West met the 7th cavalry led by Terry/Custer, and was commandeered as the expeditionary forces headquarters for a short while. The next time the Far West would have a direct role in the Sioux war would be on June 21, 1876 on the banks of the Rosebud river, when the Far West wads used as the meeting place were the expeditionary force planned its next attack on the Sioux/Cheyenne villages on the Rosebud river… or on the Big horn river. The following day on June 22nd, 1876 the 7th cavalry led by Custer went up the Rosebud river to raid villages, and the Far West was ordered to travel up the Bighorn river to the mouth of the Little Bighorn river to meet the 7th Cavalry for supplies. On June 25th, 1876 Custer encountered a Sioux village on the bank of the Little Bighorn, and the 7th cavalry was nearly wiped out. The Far West was still steaming up the Bighorn river to the Little bighorn river, not knowing Custer had been wiped out. On June 26th, 1876 a scout for the 7th cavalry found the Far West tied to the bank of the Bighorn river, and was let aboard were he told Gen. Terry that Custer had been defeated on the bank of the Little Bighorn river. Gen. Terry ordered the Far West to be turned into a hospital ship, covering the deck in grass cuttings and tarps. On June 29th, 1876 the Far West was ordered by Gen. Terry to steam up the Bighorn river to the site of the battle on the bank of the Little Bighorn river. On June 30th, 1876 the Far West was loaded with 52 wounded men from the 7th cavalry, and started its trip down to base camp on the bank of the Yellowstone river 53 miles away. Throughout June 29th, 30th, and 31st the Far West loaded up with wood raced down the Bighorn and Yellowstone river. Making an astounding downriver run of 710 mile trip to Bismark, Montana in 54 hours, setting a speed record. When the Far West arrived in Bismark, Montana it was the first news that Custer had been defeated at Little Bighorn, and the news was swiftly sent through the telegraph office in Bismark were it was broadcaster to the Nation. After a short break to regroup and celebrate July 4th, the Far west was sent with horses and supplies up the Yellowstone river on July 13th for Gen. Terry.
Following the 1876 military campaign service, the Far West continued to carry supplies up and down the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers. In 1881 the Far West was the first steamboat to arrive in Fort Benton, Montana that year. However only two years after this in October, 1883 the Far West would hit a submerged snag, and sank near St. Charles Missouri.
Leaving its mark in the history books and setting records that would hold strong for years after is loss.
