Description:
UPDATE 05/30/2021

Added even MORE new lines to Earth, Wood and Metal generals! Various typos corrected as well.

Expands vanilla 70 insults/responses into 700+ lines

This mod adds MORE variation in the battlefield conversations, including brand new lines, and lines will reflect the attitudes of the speaker. As of 04/23/2021 about 700 new dialogue lines are added (base game has about 140).

Are you tired of hearing "Oh, how witty! How VERY witty!" for the thousandth time? Then get this mod.

All dialogue text is now WuXing character specific instead of shared generic

The biggest change is ALL types of generals (FIRE, WATER, ECT) will now they will speak specific lines tailored to the style of their class replacing the vanilla system where all share the exact same pool of ~70 lines.

New dialogue is written to be more Three Kingdoms period appropriate, so to really evoke the setting of ancient China I’ve tried to write in an archaic style, rather than the vanilla generic schoolyard insults. Inspiration for speaking style is taken mainly from the 2010 Three Kingdoms TV show’s outstanding English subtitles. For example instead of "Oh, SHUT UP." variations would be "Shut up you blabbering fool!" or "Silence! You miserable villain!".

– hundreds of shared generic simple insults have added variations ("Fool!" becomes "Fatuous fool!", and "Waggle tongued fool!", and "Sanctimonious fool!", ect.)
– hundreds of specific insults have been adjusted to feel more at home in the 3k world ("You fight like a dairy farmer!" specific insult to Yaun Shao now becomes "You fight like your Hebei dairy farmers, Yaun Shao!")
– hundreds of new specific insults (in the vanilla game no one called Liu Bei a sandal-peddling wretch or made fun of him for weaving mats! unbelievable)

– Fire generals speak as if they are impetuous, rash, reckless, talk about assaults and charges.
– Earth generals speak about command, morale, troops & men, formations, and committed.
– Wood generals speak about bravery, honor, stubborn, immovable, fraternal, cheerful, the people.
– Metal generals reference skilled, cool, calm, vigilant, composed, disciplined, building.
– Water generals refer to trickery, plots & schemes, traps, stratagems, their own brilliance, tactics and counter tactics.

Please like and favorite if you enjoy this mod to help it be visible to others!

How the CA battle dialogue system works

The total battlefield conversation table contains 13,128 different lines of conversation. 11,855 of the lines are duplicates! That’s 90%! The remaining 1,273 lines are half targeted to very specific characters. So really when you play the game you are only commonly hearing the same pool of 70 initial insults, and 70 responses shared among all general types.

For example the line "How VERY witty!" is duplicated for ALL types of generals, but the table allows for the line to be different for each general type.

Before Mod Responses:
_m_fire_res_rib_gen_08 = Oh, how witty! How VERY witty!
_m_earth_res_rib_gen_08 = Oh, how witty! How VERY witty!
_m_water_res_rib_gen_08 = Oh, how witty! How VERY witty!
_m_wood_res_rib_gen_08 = Oh, how witty! How VERY witty!
_m_metal_res_rib_gen_08 = Oh, how witty! How VERY witty!

After Mod Responses:
_m_fire_res_rib_gen_08 = Prepare your neck for my blade!
_m_earth_res_rib_gen_08 = Fool! Now I shall simply adjust my tactics…
_m_water_res_rib_gen_08 = Silence cretin! And be swept aside by my brilliant strategy!
_m_wood_res_rib_gen_08 = Only a warrior of true skill can hope to challenge me!
_m_metal_res_rib_gen_08 = Oh, how witty! How VERY witty!

All conversations in the game follow a system of Initial Insult then Response. The response is pulled from matching ‘type’ of insult pool, but there are only a few different categories so it is impossible to tailor make exact responses for specific initial insults. This is why the base game insults and responses are so vague, a single response may need to match up as many as 3,000 different initial insults. I have identified a few different pools or types of conversation so far:

-Insults that trigger in both Duels and outside of Duels (and associated response pool)
-Insults that trigger only when NOT in Duel (and associated response pool)
-Insults that trigger when a rival dies (and associated response pool)
-Insults that trigger when a friend dies (and associated response pool)
-Insults that trigger when own army is doing well (and associated response pool)
-Insults that trigger when own army is doing poorly (and associated response pool)

CA’s battle dialogue system limitations

It doesn’t seem possible to assign specific responses to specific initial insults. So there will always be some level of vagueness required in writing these as you can never be 100% sure a specific response will be lined up with a specific initial stamens. The pools of responses indicated above are as ‘precise’ as you can get.

Recommended Settings

– Battlefield Conversations enabled (obviously)
– Chinese Audio Voice-Over Speech enabled (Clearly I am not able to record hundreds of voice actor lines, there is no new audio, only text)

Compatibility With Other Mods

– Should work with literally any other mod, unless it also changes hero_battle_conversation_strings.loc This mod is compatable with MTU, WU, TUP, TROM, ect.
– If you have a mod that allows strategists to duel, strategists in a duel may say lines out of context of a duel. I think TROM allows strategists to duel, so you may get some funny lines while they owned in a duel.

Community Call for Assistance and Inspiration

If anyone would like to help please let me know, the total battlefield conversation framework allows for 13,128 different lines of conversation. Many of those are character specific, but still there are THOUSANDS of potential lines we can add to the game. I’m not a writer, and there is a TON of potential if we continue to fill this mod out, so all help is appreciated.

If you hear a line that you feel is particularly dumb, let me know. I have attempted to make the dialogue more evocative, especially the insults and name calling. I want lines to feel punchy and memorable and less generic than in the vanilla game. If you feel like anything is particularly overwrought please give me feedback.
