Strudeler’s Civilizations: Iroquois (Haudenosaunee)
Play as the legendary Chief, Hiawatha; in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.
The Iroquois are not a single people, and the term Iroquois-speaker denotes the very wide range of related peoples speaking a similar language, ranging from the Huron to the Cherokee. The Iroquois Confederacy or Haudenosaunee were a group of five nations: the Mowhawk, the Onondaga, the Oneida, the Cayuga, and the Seneca. A sixth Iroquois-speaker nation, the Tuscarora, eventually joined the Haudenosaunee. The confederation was founded by three legendary figures: Deganawida the prophet and Great Peacemaker, Hiawatha the warrior turned convert, and Jigonsaseh the matriarch. The confederacy may have been founded between 1100 AD and 1450 AD. Over the course of the confederacy’s existence, it became one of the most prominent Iroquois-speaking polities and was known for diplomatic prudence and effective control of the fur trade. Eventually the Haudenosaunee was subsumed by the United States of America and Canada once the British administration had left the East Coast of North America.
