Based almost entirely on the British ‘Pattern 1914 Enfield’ design, the M1917 Enfield was designed as a substitute arm for the United States Army during World War I, it was refitted to use the .30-06 cartridge and allow an additional round in it’s magazine. Despite around two thirds of the AEF being equipped with the Enfield it was quite unpopular for being too bulky for carry.
Its use would continue in World War II by both the United States and the Philippine Army and furthermore by the People’s Volunteer Army during the Korean War.
