Designed after the 1903 Browning,the ruby was one of the many Spanish export pistols,made to looks like already popular guns,usually with simplified internals (and sometimes even improved).It began production in 1914,exactly when the French were looking for guns all over the market.Gabilondo was able to secure a contract with the French army in 1915.The French army wanted so many of them that Gabilondo had to bring other companies in to be able to produce the at some point 50000 guns required per month.
The weapon became sadly popular when other Spanish manufacturers started building their own copies of the Ruby,with varying degrees of safety and quality control,resulting in a number of guns not fitting parts made by other companies,or malfunctioning due to faulty parts
