Same-Sex Companion
Same-Sex Companion changes the religious and cultural rules for marriage to allow a same-sex companionship for all rulers, whose faith accepts same-sex relationships. These changes will only be available in games with the Same-Sex Marriages game rule not activated.
First I’ve to admit, that I appreciate the Same-Sex Marriages game rule, introduced by patch 1.5. The LGBTQ+ community has been longing for it since the very beginning of Crusader Kings III.
So why another same-sex concubine/consort mod?
Because I’ve played with the Same-Sex Marriages game rule activated in a classical male dominated game setting and it appeared to me as to powerful and useless the same.
You can quite easy marry your neighbours heir or a member of your family or court to skilled or strong characters to draw them to your court. But in CK3 marriage isn’t for satisfying your personal needs. It conduces to the mutual convenience of the involved families and primarily it’s for producing offspring. So as long as you can’t beget children with your same-sex partner, such a marriage doesn’t make much sense in terms of CR3.
Therefore, I rather prefer the concept of a same-sex companion to satisfy the needs of a ♥♥♥♥- or bisexual ruler. It resembles the mistresses at European courts during absolutism, but more formal, because it’s a legal liaison. You might say, the acceptance of homosexuality includes the acceptance of taking a same-sex companion beside a formal marriage.

• Monogamous doctrine or tradition will accept 1 concubine or consort beside your spouse.
• Polygamous doctrine will accept 2 concubines or consorts, whereas polygamous tradition just accepts 1 concubine or consort.
• Concubinage doctrine or tradition still accepts up to 3 concubines or consorts, but it doesn’t matter if same-sex or different-sex.
These changes will only be available in games with the Same-Sex Marriages game rule not activated. And only to characters, whose faith accepts same-sex relationships and who are attracted to the same sex.
In addition, a spouse with monogamous or polygamous beliefs will only accept same-sex companions without negative opinion modifiers.
It turned out, that almost any AI ruler took a same-sex companion as soon as a courtier with the needed opinion value had been available. Because this isn’t in accordance with my intention, I changed the requirements.
Now, only characters, who are soulmates, lovers or at least potential lovers will be available as same-sex companion. Furthermore, a ruler ain’t no longer enabled to offer a same-sex companion to another ruler.
By the way, there is a similar mod, Royal Mistress, which installs a Paramour court position for a ruler’s lover or soulmate.
NOTE: Due to the fact that the same-sex companion is technically a concubine/consort, for kings and emperors there will be a piety penalty. They are expected to take 2 or 3 concubines/consorts, although this mod just allows 1 concubine/consort beside a monogamous marriage. This could be changed, but this change would apply accordingly for the normal concubinage too, an interference in the game concepts far to big.
This mod contains an English and a German localization. For all other standard languages I added a localization using the English language.
As I stated above, I modified the religious doctrines and cultural traditions of marriage. Any mod, that will modify them too, will therefore be incompatible.
For introducing same-sex companionship I didn’t merely create a special set of same-sex companion interactions, I also limited the concubine interactions to characters with concubinage doctrine or tradition. Using another mod, which is modifying these interactions too, might cause problems because of this.
Furthermore, I had to modify the marriage interaction effects update_active_consort_opinion_effect and downgrade_invalid_consort_opinions_effect. Any other mod overwriting this effects, will annihilate my adaptations and cause serious trouble with your spouse by taking a same-sex companion.
This mod is only compatible with ironman, but not with achievements.
