Alfa Romeo Alfasud 1.2
This item presents the Alfasud sedan of 901 series. This compact car was produced by the Italian company Industria Napoletana Costruzioni Autoveicoli Alfa Romeo-Alfasud S.p.A. This company was owned by Alfa Romeo and Finmeccanica. The company was based in the poor southern region of Italy and the launch of this production was the work of the government to increase jobs in the South of Italy. Despite the sophisticated engineering equipment, Alfasud (especially early models) suffered from rust. Perhaps this was due to the storage conditions of body parts at the factory. However, the models had an excellent reputation. From 1972 to 1983, almost 900 thousand cars were sold. Alfasud can rightfully be considered one of the most successful production models of Alfa Romeo.
This model was designed by Austrian Rudolf Hrushka, who designed a unique engineering kit, dressed in a body by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign. The car was built at a new plant in Pomigliano d’Arco in southern Italy, which is reflected in the name of the car — «Sud» means South. Construction of the plant through public investment began in April 1968 on the site of an aircraft engine factory used by Alfa Romeo during the war.
Alfasud was shown to the public at the Turin Motor Show in 1971 and was immediately praised by journalists for its body design. 4-door sedans were equipped with their own 1.2-liter water-cooled boxer engine and timing belt drive. A feature of the model was also a complex suspension in its class, an unusual size of the car, in particular the front end and the presence of rear disc brakes. The design of the engine allowed Alfasud to place the lines of the hood well, which gives an improvement in aerodynamics (in those years — the best in this class), and gives a low center of gravity. As a result of these design features, the car had superior performance for its engine, good traction and handling that other automakers in the class have achieved for nearly a decade. Despite its conventional design, the Alfasud was not meant to be a hatchback. Of the unusual controls: headlights, signal, wipers, heater fan, to turn on which you need to pull, push, press a couple of times on the handles near the steering wheel.
Since 1978, cars have received a new engine with a volume of 1.35 liters (79 hp) and 1.49 liters (85 hp). First they were equipped with the Sprint and Ti models, and then everyone else. In 1980, all Alfasuds received plastic bumpers, a new instrument panel, headlights and taillights. At the end of 1982, the 4-door models were replaced by five-door ones. The 5-door Alfasud was replaced by the Alfa Romeo 33 in 1983, which was the development of the model. 3-door versions were sold for about a year.
