ZIL-111G
The flagship of the Soviet car industry during the mid-1960s: The ЗИЛ-111Г / ZIL-111G.
This is a modernized version of the ZIL-111A, which it replaced in 1962 as the largest and most luxurious automobile of the Eastern Bloc. It was built at the Likhachev plant in moscow.
Compared to its predecessor, the exterior design of the car was updated to the taste of the 1960s, featuring dual head- and taillights, while the tailfins were removed for a more serious look.
The ZIL’s main features were a powerful V8 engine, an automatic transmission, air conditioning and many other luxury features like electric windows.
The look and technical features of this model are inspired by contemporary American full-size-cars, such as the 1961 Cadillac Sedan DeVille. In this way, the Soviet car industry aimed to show its capability to produce modern luxury cars equal to those of American manufacturers.
In contrast to its American counterparts, this model was built in very limited numbers: Only 26 cars between were built between 1962 and 1967. All of these cars were owned by the Soviet state and were mainly used at parades, diplomatic events and for transportation of the top Communist Party officials.
On Moscow’s main streets, special "ZIL-lanes" were established exclusively for cars like this, so the communist party officials could avoid traffic jams and always reach their destinations in time.
