American Flavor Fixes

There is now an entire journal entry and scripted peace-deal concerning the Mexican-American war. Credit to calvinsoul and his Norton’s Flavor Mod for a large chunk of the scripting on this one.
Once the United States has asserted its Manifest Desiny, it can choose to take a decision to demand Mexico’s northern territory. This will immediately start a war to subjugate Mexico. After Mexico is made into a dominion, the Treaty of Guadelupe-Hidalgo will present the US with 3 choices:
- Annex claimed territory north of the Rio Grande
- Annex claimed territory, including some states south of the Rio Grande
- All of the above, and maintain American dominion over Mexico
Afterward, the US will get another event offering to settle with Mexico. The US will provide financial compensation for the annexation of Mexican territories in exchange for a reduction in infamy.
If the US chooses the historical route in the Treaty of Guadelupe-Hidalgo, some parts of Arizona and New Mexico will remain in Mexican hands. The US can offer a lump-sum to purchase this land from Mexico, provided that relations are already high.
The requirements for this have been modified slightly – now the USA can initiate a sale if a rival of Russia (or a subject of a rival) borders Alaska (so if Great Britain and Russia are rivals, essentially).
Russia can also initiate a sale, and will be more likely to do so if they are in dire financial straits.
This should no longer fail constantly. Failing the expedition once caused the events to not show up again on successive expeditions – this has been fixed.
Also, it is slightly more likely that events will happen each month, instead of nothing or progress/peril increasing incrementally with no event.
When taking this decision, the USA will now get claims on all western states that are owned or being colonized by Mexico. Originally, it would only include those states owned by Mexico and not contested by the USA.
If Texas has been annexed (either by the USA or Mexico), and at least part of it is owned by Mexico, then the US will get a claim on the remainder of the state. Likewise, if the USA annexes Texas, then the USA will inherit a claim on the remainder of the state.
This means that the USA will generally get claims on the following states when taking the decision
- California
- Nevada
- Arizona
- New Mexico
- Texas
- Colorado
- Utah
This needed a pretty big rework. Originally, the treaty only ceded land to the USA – now, the USA will cede land north of the 49th Parallel to the HBC (or Canada, if it exists) if the USA accepts the treaty. The USA can also choose "Fifty-Four Fourty or fight!" to refuse the treaty and get claims on all of British Colombia instead.
The treaty works as follows:
- The original US journal entry works normally – once the US controls Montana and Wyoming, the Oregon trail is mapped ("map the western coast" decision), and relations are above 20, the UK gets an event.
- The UK can choose to sign a treaty that grants the US Washington, Oregon and Idaho (AI will always do this), or refuse.
- The US can accept the treaty and cede any US-held territory in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba in exchange for Oregon, Washington and Idaho (AI will always do this).
-OR- - The US can refuse the treaty and get claims on all of the Oregon territory (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and British Colombia) and keep its Canadian territory.
There’s also a fix for an edge-case where HBC/Canada would annex territory in Montana before the USA could colonize, locking the Oregon treaty from occurring. Now, if Britian or a subject owns part of Montana the state is "in dispute" and will not lock out the Oregon treaty.
Several interest group settings have been tweaked.
Farmers, clergy, and aristocrats living in slave states will now be more likely to join the "Southern Planters" interest group, giving them more clout. This should make that IG the strongest political force in the agricultural south.
Clerks will now be slightly more likely to join the Petty Bourgeoisie, reducing the clout of the Intelligentsia slightly.

Things I’m currently working on or thinking about (in no particular order):
- Fixes and tweaks for The Slavery Debate and the leadup to the ACW (waiting for more from Paradox before I delve heavily into this)
- Hawaii Annexation by America
- Perry Expedition – forcing open the Japanese market. Coming in next release
- Spanish/American War and USA’s interest in Cuba, the Caribbean, and the Spanish Philippines.
