When the American troops reached France in WW1,they didn’t have a light machine gun,so they bought French 1915 Chauchat machine rifles,and modified some to fire the .30-06 round.Those rifles were less reliable than the French Chauchats,and,by the end of the war,most were destroyed,but not all.
Some French Chauchats were captured by the Germans in WW2.
