Carol the Wildcat, the secondary protagonist of the Freedom Planet games pounces into action with a heavily revised moveset, ready to help her pal Lilac in the thick of action. She is a heavy combat focused character whose moves revolve around her motorcycle. She also specialises in attack cancels, her normals can on hit all be jump, special and strong cancelled and her aerials can also be cancelled on hit.

Carol’s normals in her default state are unique. Jab, Ftilt, Utilt and Dtilt are all three hit moves that can be cancelled into each other twice for a total of a 7 hit combo but with of limited damage per hit. In addition, taking cues from Freedom Planet games she can walljump multiple times. This is signified by a number that pops up whenever you wall jump showing you how many more times you can do so. However, she has limited recovery with her Up Special as a result.

Gimmick: Motorbike

The bike is a key factor in Carol’s moveset and acts as both an alternate stance and stage control. While on the bike, Carol’s fuel depletes, meaning you can only use the bike for a limited time. While off the bike Carol has decent movement but an insane combo game which allows her to rack up multiple hits with some super fast attacks at the cost of limited kill power. On the bike Carol’s movement speed is significantly better at the cost of slower moves, but the moves have better overall kill power.

You start with full fuel. Your fuel automatically recharges when you’re off the bike unless it is stored or parked on the stage, more on those later. You can however regain your fuel quicker by attacking the opponent. The fuel is displayed on the HUD as the big yellow meter with the fuel canister next to it. Dying halves your fuel count by half.Carol can ride up walls while on the motorbike by clinging.

Carol’s moves are different depending on whether she’s on the bike or not.

Neutral Special: Wild Kick

Carol’s signature move from the first Freedom Planet game is here in the form of a multikick attack with Soft Armour. She will continue kicking for as long as your hold down the special button but with one leg unused will be unable to move. Carol can only kick for as long as the meter that appears below her during the move has any charge in it and she cannot use this move if the charge is below the yellow line. The move is the same on the bike. The move can be jump cancelled on hit and continually kicking your opponent from full charge results in more significant knockback. If Carol kicks her own bike while off it then she will deplete the bike’s fuel. If it runs out of fuel due to kicking the bike, the bike will explode.

FSpecial: Jump Disc/Bike FSpecial Air: Bike Throw

While off the bike Carol throws her Jump Disc from Freedom Planet 2 at opponent. The move works just like it does in FP2, you can aim it in multiple directions around Carol and it will act like a boomerang. If you press or hold the special button again however, Carol will Warp Jump to her disc and bounce off it. The move will go into pratfall unless you hit your opponent. If you throw it into a parked bike the disc picks up the bike and you will get back on the bike if it comes back to you, if you Warp Jump to the disc after it picks up the bike you will store the bike instead.

On the bike the move is similar but can only be performed in the air, the move becomes Bike Throw where Carol throws her bike as a boomerang instead. You can still press or hold the special button down to bounce off it. Notably, when Carol throws her Bike she will store it for future use. An icon appears on the HUD when you have a stored bike.

When you have a stored bike, if you hold shield instead of special Carol will Warp Jump to her bike and get on it when she hits it. This is true with both versions of this move, meaning you can throw your bike and then press Shield to get back on it immediately, giving you an additional option when transitioning between on and off bike states.

Throwing this move upwards will reset Carol’s walljump number to just 1.

Carol has a different FSpecial on ground while on the bike:

Bike FSpecial: Nitro Boost

Carol revs up her bike and taps into its Nitro fuel to give her a huge speed boost. This move will take a while to charge up but once it does you go zooming across the stage! It will stop instantly if you are parried but it acts as a movement burst tool if needs be. The move however is not always available and take a while to recharge, there will be a prompt above Carol’s head when the move is available again. It also consumes additional fuel when used.

USpecial: Pounce/Rising Wild Claw

Off the bike Carol’s trademark pounce move is her USpecial. This move offers barely any vertical mobility but a lot of horizontal mobility instead meaning you will need to use the Jump Disc or Carol’s 5 wall jumps to get back on the stage if you use this option. Holding down the Special button while using this move will see Carol gain a bit more height when pouncing. Her pounce can be cancelled on hit and if you use Wild Claw (Nair) out of this move it does additional damage. If you pounce on your bike it will be sent spinning into the air in the direction you pounced on it and it will damage any opponents it comes into contact with.

On the bike this is a more conventional upwards swipe but with limited vertical mobility so that the wall ride becomes more viable. The move is more functional as a powerful attack than as a mobility tool.

DSpecial: Motorbike

While off the bike, using DSpecial will allow Carol to get onto her bike. Carol can only perform this move if her bike is stored or if she has a full fuel tank and it can only be performed on the ground. If you use DSpecial again while on the bike Carol will get off the bike and park it on the stage. While the bike is parked on the stage, opponents can attack it to deplete your fuel. All of Carol’s other off bike specials interact with the bike, allowing you to deplete its fuel, make it explode, send it spinning into the air or boomerang it back from a long range distance and get back on it. While a bike is parked on the stage Carol’s fuel doesn’t recharge and with her DSpecial she can only get back on the bike if she’s standing next to it.

Bike DSpecial Air: Abandon Bike

If you use DSpecial in the air while Carol is on her bike she will drop her bike and send it spinning and crashing into the stage below where it will explode. The amount of damage this move does depends on how much fuel you have left, the lower your fuel count, the more damage it does.

Carol’s friend Lilac is also in Rivals of Aether, check her out here below:
