Jirachi, The Wishing Star!
A character for Rivals of Aether Workshop’s community Jam "Pokejam".
I’ve always wanted Jirachi to move around in a flashy way, however the main game made jirachi to be a self buff and status effects kind of Pokemon. For this playable character, I have tried to choose the moves that presents jirachi as a much more active kind of Pokemon!
Here, Jirachi is portrayed as an aerial-focused character with slow base aerial movement, but with quick burst movement like a true shooting star!
Jirachi is quite floaty, and is capable of doing 2 double jump per airtime. And all of Jirachi’s STRONGs can only be used in the air, just like Wrastor, if you’re familiar with that example.
Created by Hyuponia with major help by Spider Boi! They are the MVP of this, with animation contribution, trailer clips, and lots of playtesting – I couldn’t get this done without them! Big thanks to them!!!

Specials
NSPECIAL: Swift
A normal-type move that "Always Hits"! I had to include this move for its starry aesthetic. ("Swift" is also used as BAIR) This move shoots out a star projectile that travels a decent distance really quickly! However, you may notice that this move doesn’t deal knockback. This is because the projectile has a "polite" property! A "polite" hitbox means that it will only knock-back an opponent who is already in hitstun/state-where-you-can’t-move-after-being-hit. Hitting this properly will send the opponent towards you, so it’s possible that it can serve as a combo extender!?
FSPECIAL: Aerial Ace
A flying-type move that also "Always Hits". In here, I have tried to capture that by making the hitbox come out pretty quickly – however, its primary use is to use as an air-dash, as Jirachi will lunge forward as they attack. Might make for a cool combo starter!?
USPECIAL: Wish
In Pokemon, "Wish" is a move that heals you a few turns later. However, "Healing" is generally disincentivized in competitive play it seems, so I took another take on the concept of "Healing" in platform fighter context – getting you back on-stage. Jirachi in general has a great aerial mobility, so this move more or less serves as an emergency recovery move, not doing anything too special.
DSPECIAL: Doom Desire
Jirachi’s iconic, signature move, Doom Desire! By using DSPECIAL, you "cast" Doom Desire on the location you used DSPECIAL in. few seconds later, that location will be struck with an intense ray of light! If you’re feeling impatient, you might as well try hitting your opponent into it when the "eye indication" is flashing brighter…?
Other moves that reference existing Pokemon moves:
BAIR – Swift
FAIR and DAIR – Psychic
FSTRONG – Meteor Mash
DSTRONG – Iron Head
USTRONG – Zen Headbutt
Not all moves correspond to Pokemon moves, and I personally think that’s fine
The stage seen in the trailer and some of the screenshots are a special variant of Starry Hilltop accessible when Jirachi is present on the stage!
