AOV519’s Thrall Wizards
"Gathered in bands, these arcane servants provide supporting magic for their masters on the battlefield."
This mod adds Thrall Wizards to the Tzeentch and Warriors of Chaos rosters, inspired by old lore from Realm of Chaos: The Lost and the Damned. The lore behind the Thrall Wizards from that book was originally meant to be written for the Thousand Sons back in Rogue Trader, the 1st Edition of Warhammer 40K, but I figured that it could be adapted easily enough without feeling out of place by rewriting the lore here and there to better fit the Fantasy setting.
In-game, the Thrall Wizards serve as expendable support units with magical ranged attacks and a few bound spells, but they usually won’t last long in direct combat. All Tzeentchian factions, as well as the Legion of Chaos and most Warriors of Chaos factions, can recruit them in the campaign. They are also available in Custom Battles, but only for Tzeentch and Warriors of Chaos.
FEATURES:
– Three regular variants with the following spell lores: Tzeentch, Metal and Fire.
– One Regiment of Renown: Van Horstmann’s Acolytes.
– A new 2-level character skill called Learned Acolytes that can be learned by Sorcerer Lords of Tzeentch, Daemon Princes of Tzeentch and Vilitch. It affects all Thrall Wizards in the Lord’s army except for Van Horstmann’s Acolytes, who already have the benefits built-in to the unit.
– All of the regular variants have two single-use bound spells from their respective lores. The number of uses for those spells can be increased via the Learned Acolytes skill.
– Van Horstmann’s Acolytes instead have two bound spells from the Lore of Light as well as Glean Magic.
– A unique 3-tier ability for the Thrall Wizards called Sorcerous Sacrifice, which improves the casting capabilities of a target friendly spellcaster with the Mark of Tzeentch at the cost of posing a great risk to the Thrall Wizards themselves! In addition, the ability can only be activated when your Winds of Magic power is below 15, so it’s best used for when it’s needed. Sorcerous Sacrifice can be upgraded to a higher tier through the Learned Acolytes skill, but Van Horstmann’s Acolytes will always have the final tier of this ability.
– A new Tzeentch-aligned Gift of Chaos for certain Warriors of Chaos factions that will add one of each variant (except the Regiment of Renown) to the Gifted Unit pool when active.
– Tabletop Caps support. All variants of Thrall Wizards are Special units and cost 1 point each towards the Special units cap.
RECRUITMENT IN CAMPAIGN:
– As Tzeentchian factions: All variants of Thrall Wizards can be recruited at any settlement that has a tier 2 or higher building in the Mortal Servants chain. Because the Changeling doesn’t use regular settlements, he should instead be able to recruit them at any Parasitic Trickster Cult with the equivalent buildings.
– As Warriors of Chaos factions: After unlocking the associated Gift of Chaos by sacrificing the required amount of Souls to Tzeentch, each respective Thrall Wizard variant can then be recruited as Gifted Units once that Gift is activated. Since the Gift is associated with Tzeentch, not all Warriors of Chaos factions will have access to Thrall Wizards.
– As the Legion of Chaos: After unlocking them via the Daemonic Glory system with enough Tzeentch Glory, all variants of Thrall Wizards can be recruited at any settlement dedicated to Tzeentch with a tier 2 or higher building in the Advanced Recruitment chain. Not all of them are displayed properly on the Daemonic Glory menu, but they should still unlock regardless.
– Van Horstmann’s Acolytes: You should be able to recruit them from the RoR pool with any Lord from the above factions who have already reached the required level.
BUGS & ISSUES:
– The names of the spell lore options that can be selected for Thrall Wizards won’t display in the Custom Battle setup menu. Otherwise, they’ll still work as intended.
– May cause a CTD upon loading a battle in a multiplayer campaign.
