More Traits Enhancements and Bridge
This started as a bridge mod between More Traits and mods that add new "Fear Of" traits for new enemies. Some cosmetic improvements were also included, and there is now a new pair of traits specific to this mod, so it isn’t just a bridge mod anymore.
The More Traits mod adds both positive and negative traits, with all negative traits able to change to positive ones, usually a related specific positive trait. Several enemy mods add a "Fear Of" trait for the new enemies, this mod adds associated positive "Hunter Of" traits for them. None of the bridged mods are required (although all are high quality).
- The MOCX Initiative includes the Fear Of MOCX trait, this mod adds Hunter Of MOCX.
- If MOCX as EXALT or MOCX are SCUM is detected, the Fear of MOCX and Hunter Of MOCX traits will update text/icons accordingly.
- The Hive includes Fear Of Chryssalids, this mod adds Hunter Of Chryssalids.
- ADVENT Warlock – WotC includes Night Terrors, which is functionaly similar to a hypothetical "Fear Of Warlocks", and an ability called "Witch Killer". There is some indication that Witch Killer was going to be a positive trait, but it was made stronger and attached to the psionic reaper rifle instead. This mod breaks the old trait connection and adds a Witch Hunter trait as the positive upgrade to Night Terrors.
Many of the traits, either from More Traits or from the bridged mods, use existing base game icons, picked to fit as close as possible thematically. This mod includes custom built icons for every trait that didn’t already have one. See the attached screenshots.
Four traits from the base game (Fear Of Explosives, Of Fire, Of Poison, and Of Psionics) were missing code to allow their icons to show up in tactical. A code fix has been added here. There was also bad grammar in their English text tooltips (that couldn’t be seen previously) that has been corrected.
Traits in tactical are normally colored red for negative traits or yellow for positive. There are a small number that are either negative traits colored yellow, or (whether positive or negative) missing color settings, ending up cyan. This mod adds an option to force every trait to consistent colors. By default, it will make negative traits red and positive ones green, but there are a few other color options in the config.
A new trait named Sadistic has been added. It makes your soldier do extra damage to civilians and fellow XCom, so watch out for any sadistic soldiers that get mind controlled (or sadistic overwatchers near your mind controlled soldiers). By default, it will also add extra damage against bandits, rogue XCom, and raiders from the SCP universe factions, but those can be disabled in the config. More details for mod interactions with "Sadistic" can be found in this post. There is also a positive replacement trait, called Focused Sadism, that makes your sadists do extra damage to Advent Troopers instead.
The Sadistic trait has a chance for your soldier to shoot at civilians. Yes, this will break concealment and yes, it includes civilians in a retaliation or rescue VIP mission. However, like other panic checks, high will helps prevent the attack from happening and, pass or fail, it only does the check once per mission. The mod XCOM Civilian Defense WOTC is recommended to make killing civilians actually have an impact.
In order to make the attack work, new panic attack "abilities" had to be added. All base game, and most mod-added soldier classes, should already be accounted for, but if this mod doesn’t know what kind of attack a class should use it will fall back to the "Berserk" panic type. Please leave a comment if you find a class that goes berserk instead of attacking.
Everything this mod adds can be toggled on or off via config. There are different settings in different files, but the file XComMoreTraitsBridge.ini controls everything. For example, if you don’t want to include the Sadistic trait, you don’t need to track down and disable the various settings, setting "EnableSadisticTrait" to false in XComMoreTraitsBridge.ini will prevent it from being created.
This should be compatible with everything. It should also be safe to add or remove at any time, although make sure to backup your save if you remove it while any soldiers have any of the added traits. Limited testing revealed no problems if the mod was removed with those traits active on a soldier, but still better safe than sorry.
Community Highlander is not a hard requirement, but without it, updated trait icons only change in the strategic layer, not tactical.
Thanks to the devs/dev teams for all of the mods this one touches, they are all great!
Thanks to RustyDios for letting me use his version of Hunter/Fear of Chryssalids icons.
Thanks to Stukov for the idea that became the Sadistic trait.
If you like what I’m doing, you can leave a tip at my Ko-fi[ko-fi.com] page. It’s not required, but I do appreciate it!
