On the southern shore of West Lake stood the Leifeng Pagoda, constructed in 975 at the order of King Qian Hongchu of Wuyue Kingdom. The pagoda was originally seven-story tall and kept the king’s precious Buddhist relics and texts, but it was remodeled into a five-story tall pagoda after being severely damaged during the Northern Song Dynasty. Poets and artists have listed "the Sunset at Leifeng" as one of the "Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake". Leifeng Pagoda also holds a special place among Chinese people of all backgrounds thanks to the Legends of the White Snake.
