The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore is the cathedral of Florence – and the city’s most iconic landmark. The cathedral was built on the site of the old cathedral of Santa Reparata, and its construction spun from 1296 to 1436. Among the building’s significant features are its stained-glass windows, its vividly-colored marble facade, its collection of masterpieces created by Renaissance painters and sculptors, and atop of all its magnificent dome, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. The dome of Santa Maria del Fiore is a marvel in the history of engineering, and keeps the record of being the largest masonry dome of the world.
