Description:
Anno Domini 1257 – Enhanced Edition (3.9 Definitive Series)

– Version 3.9.3b "Gracious Game" (Mount & Blade: Warband v1.174+ compatible)

"Anno Domini 1257 – Enhanced Edition" is a continuation of DrTomas’ popular and beloved "Anno Domini 1257" mod for Warband, which brought the fun gameplay of M&B: Warband to the historical setting of medieval Europe (and its surrounding areas), in the Year of the Lord 1257.

The "Anno Domini 1257 – Enhanced Edition" mod was and is the most recent continuation of the then long discontinued original Anno Domini, made and maintained by Beowulf, and a handful of other devs (including komke and myself (Khanor) more recently), as well as individual contributors helping with some of their work and assets. We’ve all been bringing in fixes and ideas we’ve had to help improve the Enhanced Edition mod. As of 2023 the mod is still regularly maintained and updated.

The standard Enhanced Edition can be found here on Nexusmods: Anno Domini 1257 – Enhanced Edition[www.nexusmods.com]

As for this workshop mod, "Anno Domini 1257 – Enhanced Edition 3.9 Definitive Series", this is a spin off-series from the regular Enhanced Edition, with focus on continuous save game compatibility (for 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9 and 3.9.1 saves), which was sadly lost with the update to 3.10. It’s also meant as an option to those that preferred the old troop trees for England, France, Poland and Hungary. The 3.9 definitive series is built upon 3.9.1 and in addition has every save game compatible feature of 3.10 and 3.11, e.g. 95%+ of the new features, plus some newly added improvements by yours truly.
Starting with 3.9.2, there will probably be updates bringing new features from the Nexus-version of the mod over here (and vice versa) over time, as I’m still an active dev on the main mod. And I suspect more improvements that can be made to this are save game compatible than one could expect. In any case, you may go to Nexus if you want the newest and some experimental features, or stay here if you prefer the old Western European troops, the Steam auto-update feature, and/or the convenience of knowing your save games won’t be broken or outdated if you leave for a while. Choice is good as they say, and whatever you choose, enjoy and feel free to leave feedback!

One last thing I should mention is that if you have old saves (3.9.1 back to 3.5), I have renamed the mod folder to give people the opportunity to have both the Definitive Series and the standard Enhanced Edition from Nexusmods on their computer at the same time, so if wanting to continue you must go to "your_user_name_hereDocumentsMount&Blade Warband Savegames" and move (or copy over) your save games from the "1257AD – Enhanced Edition"-folder to the "Anno Domini 1257 – EE Definitive"-folder.

Mod Features

  • Traditional Mount & Blade: Warband gameplay with leading a Warband/party of your own, fighting battles, hunting bandits, doing quests, serving Kings/Faction Leaders as vassals, managing acquired fiefs, creating your own Kingdom, cultivating relations to existing characters, and much more.
  • A total conversion setting in historical Europe of AD 1257! With realistic and historical Kingdoms/factions, characters, armors, weapons, resources, locations and more!
  • A new World map including Europe, North Africa, Anatolia and parts of the Middle East, including many terrains with updated textures, such as grasslands, steppes, rivers, water/Seas, snow cover, deserts, forests, and more.
  • Many cool imported features from collaborations with other popular, quality Warband mods such as Diplomacy, the Troop Ratio Bar in battles, body guards in scenes, KAOS Political KIT, and even more.
  • Another unique mod import, the Freelancer mod, allowing you to enlist in lords’ armies as a soldier, and get paid while fighting for your employer and your own glory.
  • New troops and troop trees, historically inspired with tier build up, noble/commoner division, as well as well thought out skills, attributes, weapons and armors, for both balancing and historical accuracy.
  • The new, historical, lance recruitment system, where you recruit a contingent of soldiers with both commoners and nobles, with various degrees of experience for service, rather than one or a handful of green recruits like in vanilla. A new, optional wage system with rebalanced wages has also been created.
  • A ton of new scenes, with much more realistic town and village sizes than vanilla (e.g. bigger). Battlefields, settlements, castle interiors, and more. All hand crafted over the years by dedicated contributors.
  • New sounds, new textures, new assets all around, for a lively and historical setting!
  • New starts. In addition to the standard from rags to riches (or at least impoverished nobility to rich nobility) start as an adventurer, you can now also start as a Mercenary Captain, Bandit Leader, vassal of a Kingdom, Prince/Princess (faction heir) of a Kingdom, or even as the King/Queen (faction leader) of a faction yourself, so if you so desire you can skip some of the early game play to get into the thick of things fast.
  • New battle features, including taking over as one of your troops should you be knocked out temporarily in battle (if you have troops still fighting, the battle can yet be won even without the player character!)
  • Horse archer troop group in battles, horse archer AI.
  • Factions will spawn additional parties (details customizable in the in game mod options), such as scouts, patrols, foragers, war parties and mercenary companies, among others.
  • Special features such as naval travel, the Manor system (build your own manors near a town or village), buying land, money lenders (for loans and deposits, with interest of course), visiting your camp on the map, Knight Orders, Crusades, Jihads, upgrading armor and weapons at their respective smiths (for a price), battle kill counts, a vast amount of custom options to set to your preference in the in game menus, such as the "Enhanced Options", a new "Foraging" skill and rebalanced attribute-skill connections (with updated UI), historical names/character names/language use in general, and much, much more!

Beowulf is the main dev for the Enhanced Edition, and he’s sacrificed his PC at least once for the cause, so if you like this and can afford it, I’d say it’s a good use of money.

As for less good uses of money, there are some madmen out there who instead follow the dev strategy of building up sufficient free time and motivation, then charging in like heavy cavalry and hack away at/no-life the problem for a few days/weeks until the fix, feature and/or spin-off mod is complete (and then leave again for some time). Naturally, one-off donations seem much more appropriate than recurring payments for such variable efforts, and yes, if you’ve donated to Beowulf, you may also buy me a coffee if you want to. Mostly putting this here so you know the first isn’t myself or a scam. I also didn’t sacrifice my PC for the cause, so prioritize wisely.
