House-glassful
Here you can get houses by the project 9683/17. They can function as residential, dormitory or hotel. The outbuilding is used for public needs – cafe / shop, it is built over the main building (see screenshot, binding to a common center works). The hotel comes immediately with an annex, as a catering for guests. Thus, the following 8 objects are available:
According to this apartment-type dormitory project, 8 houses were built in Leningrad, two of which received a round extension for public institutions. The only building outside of Leningrad, the dormitory of the Krasny Oktyabr factory in Vitebsk, was built in 1979. The Belarusian building is distinguished by the number of floors (18) and facade finishing. Among the people, the hostel received the nicknames «Glassful», «Corn», «Barrel».
A basement of the building consists of pylons located along the perimeter of the outer circumference, and a cylindrical core of vertical communications. In the center of the building there is a square staircase with an elevator, around it is a closed corridor with doors. The original project provides for 104 two-room apartments of 13m². At the hostels, each of the 208 rooms is designed to accommodate 2 people. All apartments have a shower cabin with a half-bath at one end of the hallway, and a toilet at the other.
On the floor there is a shared kitchen with a gas stove, a lounge, a drying room. In the rotunda on the roof there was a recreation club (sometimes even with a greenhouse), and on the ground floor there was an assembly hall, a dining room or other common areas. In the project of an 18-storey building, the penultimate floor is also allocated for technical needs. In multi-apartment residential buildings, each apartment was calculated for one family, and common use blocks were sometimes attached to apartments as 3 rooms.
Due to the strange layout, in those years there was a tale circulating around Leningrad that these buildings were masking missile silos hidden inside. One of the residents of the house recalls: «I still remember the first time I was looking for a way out – like Semyon Farada in The Enchanters! All doors are the same. And the corridor never ends! How to get off the floor? And, most importantly, I can’t find where I came from either … I squatted down and grabbed my head until someone came out to smoke.» On the Yandex map, these buildings are marked as sights and have a fairly high rating among citizens and guests of the city.
