Prestige Based Merchant Republic Elections
This mod changes Merchant Republic Elections to be much more prestige focused rather than age and money focused.
In vanilla, the formula for respect (the number that determines the winner of the patrician elections) is this:
(campaign fund × 5) + age² + (prestige × 2) + a random factor of 500 points = respect
With that formula, the winner is pretty much always going to be the oldest candidate, even if they’re a tyrannical idiot who has accomplished nothing his entire miserable life. Of course, thanks to the huge influence the campaign fund has, you can also just make your unremarkable 16 year old teenage son win every single election in a landslide if you really wanted to, making Republics more of a gold collectathon simulator than an actual meritocracy.
What this mod does is it changes the respect formula to this instead:
(campaign fund × 2.5) + (age² × 0.125) + (prestige × 5) = respect
The prestige of your family’s candidate becomes the most important factor, age only has marginal benefit, and the campaign fund still remains a powerful tool but will no longer win you every single election unless your family actually deserves it. Now you’ll have to actually focus on grooming your heir and yourself instead of just hoarding money every time your character is about to die, and you’ll have to be much more careful about working with other patrician families lest they outshine yours. However it also means the winner of the election will likely be someone more capable than before, and they’ll have a longer reign overall because there’s less chance they’ll be knocking on deaths door by the time they’re elected.
I might expand this mod in the future to add some events as well, like holding debates and contests to add a more reliable method of giving your heir prestige, as well as to just make elections more flavorful and interesting in general. We’ll see.
This mod will affect all Merchant Republic Elections in the game (even ones you are not a part of) and should be highly compatible with other mods due to the nature of defines.lua modding. The only mods that will conflict with this one are ones that modify the same variables, and even then all that will happen is one mod will take precedence over the other with regards to the variables in question. The Republic DLC is, of course, required for this mod to function.
YES, THIS MOD STILL WORKS WITH THE LATEST VERSION OF THE GAME. If it suddenly stops working for you, it’s because you’ve downloaded another mod by a lazy/dumb/irresponsible mod author who didn’t design their mod in a way that avoids compatibility issues.
