A 5.56x45mm calibre, bullpup assault rifle designed in Singapore, the name SAR 21 is short for the Singapore Assault Rifle – 21st Century. During the mid-80s, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) looked for a new service rifle to replace the M16S1. Instead of procuring new rifles from international sources, the Singaporean Ministry of Defence opted to commission a rifle that was locally designed. First revealed to the public in 1999, the SAR 21 subsequently entered service within the SAF, phasing out the M16S1.
