The Charlton Automatic rifle was a conversion of Lee Enfield/Metford rifles into an automatic rifle (as the name implies). For New Zealand’s army, this meant a weapon that was normally fired in semi automatic mode but that could switch to automatic if necessary (in this case, by default it’s automatic, press X to change). It was meant as a weapon for the troops at home, to free actual machina guns for the front, meaning it most likely did not see actual battle, but was issued to troops.
In real life, it was generally given with the single magazine, and soldiers were supposed to load it with clips after taking out of the gun, since it had no guiding rails to load them directly (in the mod you do reload with magazines, but there was no easy compromise since it’d be quite slow to load the magazine with clips). The magazines used for these varied, they could be regular Lee Enfield style 10 round magazines, WW1 era 20 round trench magazines (this case) and even apparently Bren magazines for 30 rounds.
