Ultra Historical Demography is the fifth mod of the Ultra Historical mod series.

V. 1.0 compatible with Victoria 3 V. 1.6

Reworked Demographic Curve

The Vanilla situation

In the 1.5 beta, demographic transition was a big discussion subject, and thanks to both the community input (I did play a somewhat considerable part by bringing sources, arguments and effort-posting) and the dev’s will to listen to the community, the demographic simulation in the game was improved a lot.

  • pollution effect on mortality
  • pop’s litteracy effect on birthrate
  • healthcare institution improved and rebalanced
  • defines regulating both birthrate and mortality depending on Standart of Living were overhauled for more moddability and more historicaly accurate balance

(Vanilla’s curve)

What is still off?

For gameplay reasons, the devs still consider pop growth as a "reward", or more accurately, they don’t want the players to be incentivized to maximize pop growth by deliberately keeping pops poors.
In the Ultra Historical Team, we respectfuly disagree with that approach, considering that high population growth brings its own challenge and is not necessary something "good" but more a parameter to deal with.

Issues with this curve :

  • The standart of living needed for max pop growth (20) is too high.
Unless you manage to achieve a communist utopia in the last third of the game, you are unlikely to bring your working class in a high enough Standart of Living for your population growth to slow down/stabilize.
De Facto the richer your population, the faster they increase
wich is innacurate considering most western countries that achieved demographic transition within the era.
  • Birthrate and Mortality at high SoL are historicaly innacurate and does not consider all parameters affecting demography.
Both are ridiculously too low, even for today’s standards.
  • Early game population growth is still too slow
It used to be really worse, especially in early beta iteration, so it is still an improvement.
but it leads the player to be out of available employable pops really too soon and no enough migrations from the Old World to the New one.

Mod’s changes

Reworked pop growth curve

  • Birthrate slightly increase with SoL as pops gets out from their misery
  • Early maximum at SoL 11 so massive pop growth can happen along Industrial Revolution
  • High plateau but with both birthrate and mortality decreasing between Sol 11 and 15
  • Slow decrease until stabilization at SoL 22
  • Realistic values of both birthrate and mortality at nearly every points of the curve

Historical Outliers

Some countries despite similar conditions had very different demographic behaviours compared to most western nations. Reasons being too complex to be organicaly simulated by the game, we added modifiers to represent them.

  • France suffers consequences of Napoleonic Wars and Malthusian Thought
  • Russian populations, living in hardship, gets both bigger mortality and birthrate

Other changes
  • Threshold for extra birthrate from sparsely populated area increased
  • Threshold for overpopulation increased
  • Medecine techs now gives mortality decrease per wealth
  • Healthcare laws revized accordingly

Available Languages

There is only 4 new modifiers to localize. They are available in :

  • English (by default for "unsupported languages")
  • German
  • French

Note about VTM compatibility

Uh series mods are mostly compatible with VTM (it might exist very minor incompatibility but nothing game breaking) but you have to place the UH series mods after VTM in your modlist.
