FSO Warszawa M20-U (1956 Prototype)
"You can’t possibly make yet another Warszawa prototype!"
In 1956, The Passanger Car Factory in Warsaw, Poland, aimed to update their aging FSO Warszawa M-20, itself a licensed copy of the Soviet GAZ M-20 Pobeda, a design which’s technicals and aesthetics originated from the time of The Second World War. It was this year that FSO was finally able to manufacture the M20 on their own accord, without imported parts and aid from the Soviet Union.
FSO desired to update it with a new look to keep it up with the times, as well as some technical upgrades.
The factory management knew they couldn’t push the changes too far, so a prototype was made, intending to change the front and rear end, as well as the suspension, brake system, and gearbox. It also included interior improvements and engine tweaks.
One of the prototypes’ versions featured three headlights, showing a potential for a pretty radical facelift, and let it keep up with the times.
This, of course, never bore any fruit, as the technical changes made were too far-fetched for the fledging Varsovian car industry.
What happened to the prototypes is unknown.
That’s for you to find out! Or, maybe make them yourself in your own little republic!
