Strudeler’s Civilizations: Columbia (It’s a Canadian Year of the Dragon)
Play as Canada’s preserver of nature and the rights of men, David Suzuki; in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.
Columbia is, of course, named after Christopher Columbus; however, the explorer’s name has been broadly applied across the Americas. Both Spaniards and Yankees have come to honour Christopher Columbus in some way. The Columbia of the Pacific Northwest is named after a river which is named after a vessel which in named after Columbus. Columbia’s origins began with three competing powers: the fledgling American Republic, the British traders of the Pacific and of the various Canadian corporations, and the overextended Spanish Empire. Various land grabs led to America and Britain disagreeing on the borders of the Oregon Country/District of Columbia throughout the 1800s. Eventually the fur trade was diminished by American gold diggers and the Hudson Bay Company receded to the east. The absence of the Hudson Bay Company also cut down the rights of the natives as new British immigrants claimed more land. Eventually the Britons of Columbia settled for a confederacy with Canada to maintain their allegiance to the Empire, despite the flow of money coming from San Francisco. The province’s position on the Pacific made it an entrepot for immigrants from Asia, in particular the Chinese, Japanese, and Indians that wished to enter the New World.
