Description:

A basalt stele excavated in 20th century provided an immeasurable insights about laws and lives in 18th century BCE. The top of the stele features an image of the Babylonian king Hammurabi with Shamash, the god of sun and justice. Beneath it carved the Code of Hammurabi, the best-preserved and best-organized legal text from the ancient Near East (and thought to be the most ancient code of laws until the discovery of more ancient ones like the Code of Ur-Nammu). The Code of Hammurabi depicted a broad scope of acts considered crimes, with detailed descriptions of how each crime should be punished (most following “eye for an eye” principle). The stele is now kept in the Louvre Museum, with a number of replicas in important places like the headquarters of the United Nations as a tribute to the spirit of laws and society built by our predecessors.

“Then Anu and Bel called by name me, Hammurabi, the exalted prince, who feared God, to bring about the rule of righteousness in the land, to destroy the wicked and the evil-doers; so that the strong should not harm the weak, so that I should rule over the black-headed people like Shamash and enlighten the land, to further the well-being of mankind.”- Code of Hammurabi
