Description:

This mod seeks to create a new base map which better reflects the political and cultural world at the start of the game, where borders are not lines drawn on the map, but reflects actual on the ground control. As such large parts of the map have been decentralised and province borders redrawn.

We are releasing the mod right now as an open beta. While care has been taken to ensure everything works, there will probably be bugs and other unintended behaviour.

We’ll let the screenshots speak for themselves, but here is a brief overview of what this mod contains:

Main features:
  • A crusade against colonial era borders; no longer are the peoples of Africa confined to arbitrarily drawn borders 100 years after the game’s start, but instead are represented closer to their historical homelands. Modern borders still exist on the map and as you start your conquest and colonisation they will reappear allowing you to be the true imperialist you are, but at the start of the game they don’t exist yet;
  • Each state has its own unique resource setup, enhancing flavour and making each state more valuable in its own right. A concious effort was made to limit the number of different buildings per state to 4 agricultural and 4 resource buildings to improve performance, though a large number of states do have more;
  • Numerous rivers and other geographical features have been added to the map; the Grand Canal now flows from Beijing to Nanjing, the Sudd forms a formidable barrier separating Egypt from sub-Saharan Africa and the Amazon is the vast system of rivers it should be. Coastlines and lakes have seen numerous adjustments to be more accurate;
  • Iron, lead, sulfur and coal are now discoverable resources, and large amounts of them have been set as undiscovered. Europe, North America and China, Japan and Korea are pretty well endowned with discovered resources, the rest of the world not so much. Happy hunting.
  • Copper has been added as a (discoverable) good and used for a number of applications, most notably of course late game for electricity production, radio’s and telephones.
  • Indian Removal was a horrible experience and you will get to share in it through around 25 events as you will visually see the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole be removed west;
  • Montenegro now has a proper flag;

Compatibility:
  • This mod is designed for use with the latest version of Victoria 3 (currently 1.6.1) and the full DLCs that have been released for Victoria 3 (currently Voice of the People and Colossus of the South). The DLCs are needed for use of this mod, it will not work on a basic installation of Victoria 3 without the DLCs activated.
  • Any mod which makes any changes to the map setup or adds goods is going to be incompatible. I’ll be releasing some compatibility patches for popular mods soon I hope
  • Any mod which does not do either of those things is probably compatible, but this will vary on a case to case basis and might result in odd behaviour.
  • All screenshots were taken with the Shaded Relief Map v2 by linwajun, but any other map theme works as well naturally
  • Hub placement is optimised for the Miniature World by Cepherion. Other mods which shrik the size of map assets will also work. Vanilla also works, but the hub placement might not be ideal.

Mods for which a compatibility patch will hopefully soon come:
  • Morgenröte: Dawn of Flavor
  • Greece, Byzantium, & the Balkans Flavor
  • Hail, Columbia!
  • Australia & New Zealand Flavor Pack
Mods which are incompatible and for which a compatibility patch is unlikely:
  • Victorian Flavor Mod – the changes to the map they made makes this virtually impossible

Credits:
  • OHGamer for the many contributions he made, and most importantly, motivating me to keep working and bringing it to release
  • ECCHI for the portrait of Emerson. Don Carlos and a few others
  • Norton’s Flavor Mod for a little bit of content for the American conquest of California

Known issues:
  • The economy might be a bit wonky due to the changed resource setup and the addition of copper. Feedback is much appreciated;
  • I was unable to edit the placement of trees and other such assets on the map. This means there will be trees in places they shouldn’t be (such as on rivers, in lakes and on the seas). As I finally figured out the case (accidently deleting a few files I need to remake) there will be an update soonish;
  • I’ve added around 60 new states to the map and quite a few countries. This will impact performance, though as large parts of the world are now decentralised and resources have been consolidated the impact is not that bad (though I do have a pretty hefty rig)
  • The Colosus of the South DLC might not work probably. I did adjust the code so it should work, but I didn’t have time to test it thoroughly. Specifically I think the Acre dispute might be broken.
  • A state might be missing a resource you feel it needs. Know that I am probably aware of that, but that I made a concious decision to remove it help performance. If you feel the missing resources had real significance for the game’s time period, let me know and I’ll see how we can accomodate it.
