Playable Land Republics: Rags to riches Submod
Submod for the very cool Landless Mod "Bum to God: Rags to riches – RTP" to add some flavor and mechanics. Works also with "More Playable Governments" and "Golden Dominion".
You are also able to play as the "unplayable" republic or theocracy… but those governments are not really set-up to play.
So you are able to play as Serene Republic Venice from the beginning. Also you can play as Pope.
I made a small mod to add some things and test around, adding some flavor.
Important: Read the Base Mod description. You can only play as republic, if your char has a Lowborn family or you are noble. You cant play a republic with a standard Lowborn holder – game will crash after a while!
At the moment I just added a sucession law for republics, so you can play without ending the game with "no heir". You are also able to switch to republic if you have all requirements.
Also republics get a special CB to attack their liege or other non-republic rulers.[/b]
- added "Feudal" start for all Barony-Tier Cities. Cities are no longer "Republican" or "Communal" as before. Cityrights can be achieved over time.
- added "Burgher" sucession laws. As Feudal City-Baron you can give more rights to your courtiers & your people to vote. You also can establish a full communal government over time!
- [Soon!] "Imperial Town" for the HRE, the highest barony-tier status you can achieve. With this status you get boni and the most important thing: local noble rulers cant revoke the holding, because you are under imperial rule!
- added a "Sucession Laws & Gov" Decision for players who want change things.
Plans
- adding a special traits & modif. – like: you joined the court of an barony-tier commune – after 5 years you get a citizens trait with bonuses for the voting or (its an idea) you only can be elected with this trait (?)
adding diffrent election types:
-
Oligarchy
Election is based on influence and money. How much more money you have, you get more points.
-
Noble Election
gives lowborn candidates a very high debuff, so they are not blocked but its impossible to get votes.
-
Dictatorship
gives a debuff to all non dynastic or holder based election points. So there are candidates, but all points go to the ruler and his "heir". Its the first step to get feudalism or other non-communal govs.
-
Peasant Commune
Lowborns are favorized to get elected – nobles get a high debuff. Maybe something after a peasant revolt.
- maybe some special forms of feudal barony-tier cities for feudal rulers – with diffrent succession laws
- more flavor, interactions, decisions & court stuff
Info
- Its technically not possible at the moment to add the influence candidacy for baronies – because baronies are normally not playable (paradox… why!) … but we look positive on this topic: Its like you get voted by the local citizens. The voting system is good enough and the chances to get voted if you are skilled, same culture and & and is high enough. I try to sneak around & find another way.
One idea:For example: You spend money for the poor citizens – you get a modifier for XY years and this modifier gives you +10 voting strenght
- Children cant be elected – with any communal sucession – only adult chars can vote and be elected! You cant vote for children, so you need an adult family member to success. ONLY the Feudal Burgher sucession law allows children in the line of succession!
- guests cant vote – so if you are just a guest of an republic ruler, you cant be elected or vote!
IMPORTANT!
You need the Mod "Bum to God: Rags to riches – RTP" to play with this mod! This mod does not allow to play as Republic or other things as base. Its just working as submod.——> Loading Order:

Playtrough Ideas
You can start as landless lowborn or noble and visit every court. You can gain gold and prestige and buy a city-holding from your liege or maybe he gives you a city-holding.
If you are inside a county or higher tier republic, you can get court & council positions as court-member with more election power.
If you are a mayor of a city inside a republic, you also get more strength for the election. Keep in mind: if you are from an foreign culture or religion, your chances are very low.Inside the byzantine empire, you are stopped to go further – Cities are ruled by appointed governors, so you cant buy a holding or be elected. But if you manage to be an appointed governor, you can convert the city to an communal one [soon!] – But the rightful governer can revoke your rights!
If you are a Mayor under Feudal Rule, you can try to get the County-Title of your liege and become a Citystate. With the City-State tier you can do more stuff but voting is also much more difficult.
Other vassals can vote, like cities or castle govs. with more influence. Also courtier can become very powerful after time. You can also play an existing republics like Venice from the earliest start. With the 12th century bookmark you get a lot italian republics to play.
