Kröpeliner Tor, Rostock

Requice! we’re no longer alpha
Today’s Kröpeliner Tor is considered the most beautifully preserved Gothic monument in Rostock. Its construction began in the 13th century, when the city wall was also built around the three towns that joined together in 1265. The first mention of it can be found in records from 1260/1276 as ‘Valva Crapelyn’.
The original gate had two storeys and was used exclusively for the defence of the town. Developments in weaponry around 1400 made it necessary to reinforce all defences, so the Kröpelin Gate also underwent its first modifications. In order to provide better shooting positions and more storage space, it was raised to six storeys and given a wooden walkway. Of its early Gothic walls, only a 10 metre high remnant remains. It can still be recognised today by the dark, deep red rows of bricks above the granite base.
