Britons dye their bodies with Woad, which produces a blue colour and gives them a wild appearance in battle. Scholars began to equate and apply ‘vitrum’ to the indigo/blue dye produced from the leaves of the indigenous Woad plant (Isatis tinctoria). Today, many modern lexicons now assert that ‘vitrum’ refers to ‘Woad, a blue dye used by the Britons made from that plant’
