Description:
What if the Western Roman Empire survived while the East fell?

Sola Roma is an alternative timeline mod that aims to imagine a world where Eastern Rome (Byzantine Empire) collapsed instead of its western counterpart.

In 1444, roughly one thousand years after the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire, the Western half still stands. Shortly after fall of the east the greek rump states were subjugated by the Huns who have since then settled into a militarist state. They have long dominated the region and subjugated the Greek states, although in recent years the Hunns have declined due to the Greek states banding together under the once little known city state of Byzantion in an alliance called the Hellenic Federation and managed to successfully push the Huns out of Hellas. Now the question is if Hunnia can subjugate the Greeks for a second time and bring their empire back to its former glory. In germania, Saxonia and Frankia are both eager to expand. Frankia has its eyes set on Gaul where Roman influence has grown weak due to years of neglect from the many emperors of the Valerius dynasty. Saxonia, who recently converted to the Catholic faith seems to have regrets about their decision and are at the same time looking to conquer new parts of germania to feed their growing ambitions. Meanwhile, the son of the Saxonian king – Erlgang ‘the Conqueror’ – has with help of his father managed to conquer parts of Britannia and are beginning to settle the isle as new Saxo-Anglish land while pushing out the Brittonic nations, but the resistance from the Celts is not to be overlooked as they too vie for power on the isle. One of the few remaining nations of the germanic faith, Lugia, remain steadfast in their worship of the old gods and under the right rule perhaps they could usher in a new and prosperous age for the heathens and bring about a strong pagan realm. Hiberian nations, who long ago rebelled against the roman government under the banner of a pretender called Herius ‘Purpura’ Asullio, are unhappy with there relationship with Rome and are on the brink of ending their ties to the roman goverment, this time maybe permanently. In the north, the Goths and Swedes are locked in a stuggle for the future of Scandinavia, once united they could wreak havoc on the continent.

This mod contains an all new political, religious and cultural map of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Along with slight modifications in the stepps, subsaharan africa and parts of Asia.

  • 100+ New Events
  • 14 Mission Trees
  • 40+ New National Idea Groups
  • 16 New Estate Privileges
  • 5 New Government Mechanics
  • Empire of the Romans Mechanic & Praetorian Guard Estate
  • 40+ New Government Reforms
  • Many new nations, religions and cultures
  • …And much, much more…

Countries with Mission trees include West Rome, Lugia, Sicilia, Hunnia, England, Longobard, Suebia, Gotia, Swethiod, Saxonia, Frankia, Byzantion, Brittonic and Hiberian Nations.

Many other nations have additional content but most of this is surface level. Examples of these countries are Magyars, Kiev, Finland and Kuadland.

Fair Warning, this mod mostly has content for the first 200 years of the games, the longest lasting campaign belong to Frankia and Rome who should have content for that period. Also there is a lot of content still left in from the base game, either because its necessary for the game and hasn’t been relocalized or because we’ve missed it, so be prepared for any immersion breaking event.

An early thank you for trying Sola Roma! This has been a passion project and has been worked on for about a year now. Big thanks to Ante Bellum and Post Finem for inspiration, you most likely know that they are amazing mods but if you haven’t tried them, I can recommend them wholeheartedly.

As of 2026, updates have slowed down due to work on other projects, but some updates have been worked on and may be released.

Regarding DLC:

Mandate of Heaven, Dharma and Cradle of Civilization are mandatory. Winds of Change, King of Kings or Origins are not needed but of course the experience will be better with all DLCs.
