Description:

In basically every game I play now the Byzantine Empire snowballs into a monstrously sized behemoth that completely flattens all of its neighbours, which I find annoying to look at, varying degrees of ahistorical depending on the year, and ruinous for my computer. Rather than being a neat thing that can happen, the 4th Crusade mechanic becomes my last hope to stem the Eastern Roman tide, but even that is a coin flip half the time.

Consequently, I have slapped this mod together in about thirty minutes with a bunch of reductions to their military capabilities, aimed at reducing their ability to simply obliterate their neighbours.

This mod does the following:

– For all Administrative characters:
— Levy sizes decreased by 60% (from 50%)
— Men-at-Arms regiment max size decreased by 4 (from 2)
— Men-at-Arms regiment max count decreased by 2 (from 0)
— Title Men-at-Arms max size decreased by 2
— Title Men-at-Arms max count decreased by 1
— Characters have a -30% monthly influence penalty
— Characters pay +30% gold for Men-at-Arms maintenance.
– For the "Imperial Tagmata" tradition:
— removed +1 Title Men-at-Arms max size bonus
— Heavy Cavalry Men-at-Arms size bonus decreased to +1 (from +2)
– For "Civilian" administrative vassals
— Title Men-at-Arms size and count penalty reduced to -1 each (from -2, because it was going into the negatives)
— Men-at-Arms maintenance increased by 20%

Hopefully, this should make it so that the Byzantine Empire (and any other admin realm but basically mostly the Byzantines) is still capable of enormous military might, but really has to spend the influence and gold on Men-at-Arms and Mercenaries, since any one title holder holds a lot less.

Maybe I’ll have to tone this down or maybe I’ll have to try to triple the influence cost of using your vassal’s title Men-at-Arms. Who knows.

I don’t know what conflicts this might have with other mods. Given that it just fiddles with some values and adds some character modifiers to Admin governments, I’m assuming not much but no promises.
