Operation Northern Thunder
________________________________________
Mission Title:
Operation Northern ThunderMission Date:
September 15, 1985 – 06:45
Situation Overview:
In a surprise move, Soviet forces have established control over Northern Norway, rapidly deploying troops, naval units, and air defenses to secure critical strategic points in the Arctic. This occupation threatens NATO’s supply lines in the North Atlantic and places allied forces at severe risk of losing control over the region.Intelligence reports indicate that the Soviet Navy is operating a powerful task force in the area, led by the fearsome Kirov-class battlecruiser. This task force is supported by heavily armed escorts, submarines, and land-based assets, including SAM sites and a critical oil refinery that is supplying the Soviet fleet. The refinery, located along the northern coast, is fueling the Soviet war machine and must be neutralized.Additionally, Soviet attack submarines have been detected operating in the vicinity, posing a significant threat to NATO’s naval assets. The Victor III-class submarine, known for its stealth and lethality, has been spotted in the area. These submarines are believed to be scouting ahead of the main Soviet task force and targeting NATO supply convoys.

Mission Objectives:
1. Primary Objectives:
o Neutralize the Kirov-class battlecruiser and its escorts. This unit is the centerpiece of the Soviet naval presence and must be destroyed to cripple their operations.
o Destroy the Soviet oil refinery. The refinery is a critical logistical hub supplying fuel to the Soviet fleet. Its destruction will disrupt their ability to sustain operations in the region.
o Engage and destroy Soviet submarines. The Victor III-class submarine and other enemy submarines in the area must be hunted down and neutralized to protect NATO’s naval forces and supply convoys.
o Eliminate Soviet land-based SAM sites. These defenses are preventing NATO aircraft from operating freely in the area. Neutralizing them will allow allied air support to operate effectively.
2. Optional Objectives:
o Protect allied shipping lanes in the area from Soviet attack submarines.
o Minimize collateral damage to civilian infrastructure.

Execution Plan:
Phase 1: ASW Operations
• Deploy ASW assets, including P-3C Orion and Spruance-class destroyers, to locate and destroy Soviet submarines. Priority should be given to the Victor III-class submarine threatening NATO supply convoys.
Phase 2: Air Superiority
• Suppress Soviet SAM sites using long-range strikes and electronic warfare. This will allow NATO air support to operate freely in the area.
Phase 3: Neutralize the Oil Refinery
• Conduct precision strikes on the Soviet oil refinery. Utilize air assets to destroy the refinery while minimizing collateral damage to surrounding infrastructure.
Phase 4: Engage the Kirov Battle Group
• Coordinate a combined naval and air assault on the Kirov task force. Use Harpoon missiles, torpedoes, and air strikes to neutralize the battlecruiser and its escorts.
Phase 5: Secure the Area
• Once the Kirov and its escorts are neutralized, conduct mop-up operations to ensure all Soviet forces in the area are destroyed.

Key Considerations:
• The Kirov-class battlecruiser is heavily armed with SS-N-19 Shipwreck missiles and a formidable air defense system. Approach with caution and coordinate attacks to overwhelm its defenses.
• Soviet submarines are operating in the area and will actively target NATO ships. Maintain vigilance and deploy ASW helicopters and patrol aircraft.
• The oil refinery is a high-value target but is well-defended by SAM batteries. Precision strikes are critical to avoid unnecessary losses.

Commander’s Intent:
NATO’s control over the North Atlantic is critical to the overall war effort. The Soviet occupation of Northern Norway and their naval presence in the region represent a direct threat to NATO’s ability to project power and secure vital shipping lanes. Your mission is to destroy the enemy’s ability to sustain operations in the region by neutralizing their naval assets, eliminating their logistical hub, and restoring control over the area. The success of this operation will send a clear message to the Soviet Union and ensure NATO’s dominance in the Arctic theater.Good luck, Commander.
