Historical Japanese Monarchs
Historical Japanese Monarchs (HJM) is a mod that improves and extends the historical Japanese monarchs from the base game. As of 1.13, PDX has implemented a full roster of emperors from Ninko to Showa (Hirohito) and shoguns from Ienari to Iesato. For players with The Great Wave DLC, there are even special events surrounding the ascensions of shoguns and emperors. This supersedes most of what HJM originally did, but HJM can still be used to ensure shoguns & emperors retire or die at historical times to keep the succession of Japanese rulers moving on schedule.
HJM leverages the heir-blocking features of the Heir Blocking Framework to stop ahistorical heirs from appearing while driving historical heirs for Japan. As long as the monarchy isn’t abolished at any point, HJM will spawn in historical shoguns & emperors as appropriate throughout the course of a game.
On top of that, HJM has a feature for driving historical deaths of historical shoguns and emperors instead of letting them live to ahistorical ages. A game rule allows the user to select whether the deaths should be forced, encouraged (i.e. RNG-dependent), or not enforced at all (for base game old age deaths). It is recommended to play with forced deaths to allow for all of the historical monarchs to be seen!
HJM also adds templates & DNA for Emperors Heisei (Akihito) and Reiwa (Naruhito), and a template for Tokugawa Iemasa. It also provides custom DNA for Taisho and Showa (which HJM originally had before 1.13), and these can optionally be used instead of the base game DNA data if you prefer via a game rule.
HJM REQUIRES either the Heir Blocking Framework or the Community Mod Framework for proper functionality. You do not need both. Without either of these mods, ahistorical heirs will not be blocked and it may interfere with the mod.
HJM has built-in support for Royal Splendor. Please remember to set the "Japanese Emperor Templates" game rule to "Use Royal Splendor" before starting a new campaign!
