Briefing Operation Northern Thunder II
________________________________________
Operation Northern Thunder II
Date: September 15, 1985
Time: 06:45
Location: Approaching the Kola Peninsula
________________________________________
Briefing Summary:
Following the destruction of the Soviet Kirov-class battlecruiser in the previous operation, NATO forces have seized the initiative and begun advancing eastward toward the strategically critical Kola Peninsula. This region, home to vital Soviet naval and air installations, is heavily fortified and represents a key stronghold for the USSR.The Soviet Union views NATO’s advance as a direct threat to its territorial integrity and has mobilized its forces to counter the offensive. Intelligence reports indicate that the Soviets are preparing to deploy their Orel-class carrier battlegroup, a centerpiece of their naval power, to halt NATO’s progress.Meanwhile, NATO’s German submarine group has successfully infiltrated the northern Tromsø region undetected, positioning itself near Soviet oil platforms. This presents an opportunity to strike a critical blow to Soviet logistics and infrastructure.

Mission Objectives:
Primary Objective:
• Destroy the Soviet Fleet: Intelligence confirms the presence of the Orel-class carrier and its battlegroup in the region. Neutralizing this fleet is essential to crippling Soviet naval operations and securing NATO’s advance.
Secondary Objective:
• Sabotage Soviet Oil Infrastructure: A German submarine group has infiltrated the northern Tromsø region undetected. Utilize these submarines to attack Soviet oil platforms and naval vessels, causing maximum disruption to their supply lines.
________________________________________
Key Threats:
1. Soviet Naval Forces:
o The Orel-class carrier battlegroup is heavily armed and supported by surface combatants and submarines. Expect layered defenses and coordinated attacks.
2. Air Superiority:
o Soviet airbases along the Kola Peninsula are on high alert. Expect aggressive sorties of Su-24M attack aircraft, Tu-22M bombers, and MiG-31 interceptors. Maintaining air superiority is critical to protect NATO forces.
3. Coastal SAM Systems:
o Soviet SA-10 Grumble and SA-5 Gammon SAM sites are deployed along the coastline. These systems can engage NATO aircraft at long ranges. Extreme caution is advised when operating near these zones.
________________________________________
NATO Assets:
1. Surface Fleet:
o Task Force 1 includes the USS Nimitz (CVN-68), supported by AEGIS-equipped cruisers and Spruance-class destroyers.
2. Submarine Units:
o German Type 206 submarines have infiltrated the oil platform region undetected. Utilize them to strike Soviet platforms and vessels.
3. Air Support:
o F-14 Tomcats will provide air superiority and strike capabilities. Ensure Combat Air Patrols (CAP) are maintained.

Commander’s Notes:
• Prioritize the Soviet Carrier: The Orel-class carrier is the centerpiece of Soviet naval power in the region. Its destruction will severely weaken their ability to project airpower.
• Air Superiority is Critical: Without dominance in the skies, Soviet bombers could devastate NATO assets. Deploy AWACS and CAP to intercept incoming threats.
• Beware of SAM Sites: Soviet coastal defenses are formidable. Use electronic warfare assets to suppress or avoid these systems.
• Submarine Operations: The German submarine group near Tromsø is an invaluable asset. Their stealth capabilities give NATO a decisive edge in disrupting Soviet infrastructure.
________________________________________
Mission Success Criteria:
• Successful destruction of the Orel-class carrier and its fleet.
• Effective neutralization of Soviet oil platforms and naval logistics in the Tromsø region.
• Maintaining NATO air superiority over the engagement zone.
________________________________________
Weather Conditions:
• Sea State: Moderate (State 3)
• Wind: NW, scattered clouds.

Good luck, Commander. NATO forces are counting on your decisive leadership. Prepare for immediate deployment.
