Description:

Submission for the (from mario) jam. Lobb is one of the basic enemies from ‘Mario Clash’, where it carted about and threw iron balls at Mario. In Rivals, Lobb is a mixed-archetype fighter with strengths in zoning and brawling. It has quirky movement due to its low friction and burst options in side special and wave-dashing.

Character and scenario property of Nintendo. Victory theme arranged by Room 100. Special thanks to Brum for advice and encouragement, and the incredible poses he drew with for Lobb’s main portrait.

~Specials~

Neutral special: Iron Ball
Lobb throws an iron ball, with an angle based on directional input – up arcs it higher and down arcs it lower. There can only be one ball in play at once, but using the move again will catch it and allow you to throw it again.

The ball will bounce off players it hits, when parried, or when struck by any attack dealing at least 6%. Lobb can send it back with any hand-based attack – dash attack and up special have dedicated search boxes to facilitate this. Try to keep the ball bouncing against your opponent to rack up damage and quickly earn a KO.

Side special: Air Spin
Lobb hurls itself forward as an effective burst option. It makes a reliable recovery aid, and was designed to allow you to reach your ball quickly if you needed to catch it before it fell. Based on The Noise’s air spin in Pizza Tower, unless non-Mario source material gets me disqualified, then it was actually based on the Monty Tank in New Super Mario Bros..

Up special: Ultra Hand
A long-ranged tether that grabs either foes or the terrain in order to pull yourself up. Deals a solid blow and acts as an effective combo finisher. Sends your ball diagonally down like a volleyball spike.

Down special: Catcher’s Mitt
Lobb’s hand swaps for a baseball glove that will pick up your ball if you dropped it, allowing you to use it again sooner. The glove must be out for at least 20 frames before you can put it away, but catching your ball allows you to skip this. The move also has a hitbox on button release (button down on v1.2 due to complaints but I couldn’t live with myself knowing I betrayed my heart) that grabs and fires targets from Lobb’s body like a cannon. This is a semi-spike but with a low hitstun multiplier.
As of v1.3, this move now also reflects projectiles! It was intended from the start but I couldn’t figure it out. It flips around most projectiles (if the proj can be reflected) but not articles, which are tricky to program reflection into. The hurtbox has also been shrunk to make the move safer to use.
