T-72B Mod.1989主战坦克是苏联时代T-72系列最后一次大规模改进。虽然该车和T-72B Mod.1985仅仅相差年份标识，但实际上差距可谓巨大。
T-72B Mod.1989的改进项目主要是针对防护，该车更改了首上的装甲配方同时T-72B原本的接触-1爆炸反应装甲套件被接触-5爆炸反应装甲取代。
进行了如上修改的T-72B防护性能得到了巨大提升。T-72B Mod.1989的首上和炮塔正面KE与T-80U相仿，约在620mm-630mm。

The T-72B Mod.1989 main battle tank is the last large-scale improvement of the T-72 series in the Soviet era. Although the vehicle and the T-72B Mod.1985 only differ in year markings, the difference is actually huge.
The improvement project of the T-72B Mod.1989 is mainly aimed at protection. The vehicle changed the armor formula of the upper front and the original T-72B contact-1 explosive reactive armor kit was replaced by contact-5 explosive reactive armor.
The protection performance of the T-72B modified as above has been greatly improved. The KE of the upper front and turret front of the T-72B Mod.1989 is similar to that of the T-80U, about 620mm-630mm.
