Even More Authentic Reskin
Did you enjoy Authentic Vanilla Reskin, my previous mod?
Let me introduce you to Even More Authentic Reskin.
This mod is an even more advanced reskin than the previous one, aiming to completely overhaul the units of all factions in the game, For now, all land units have been reskinned. Some factions already have all their generals and naval units reskinned as well. (see F.A.Q. below).
In addition to a detailed reskin, this mod focuses on three main aspects:
- A complete redesign of all shield visuals
- A rework of helmet and armor to create a more cohesive aesthetic
- The creation of new models and textures to add more variety to the armors
To achieve this, I relied on the mod "Late Roman Shield Designs: Modder’s Resource", from which I used the shield base. From there, I changed all of the shield patterns by hand-painting them using motifs taken directly from the Notitia Dignitatum. Unit ranks are now reflected in their shields, and I even went the extra mile by creating two variants per shield to avoid a factory-made feel.
I also reworked many of the metal textures, especially on helmets, which often used to clash with each other in terms of tone. These textures have been refined to better match the game’s aesthetic and most visual overhaul mods.
Lastly, I added new brass textures for certain helmets to increase variety even further. I also took more models from older Total War games, but always made sure not to include any model that would break the visual harmony.
As for the visual design choices, they remain the same as those from Authentic Vanilla Reskin:
“I reworked the color schemes of clothing and shields based on the historical research of Michel Pastoureau. This results in a wide variety of colors, though rarely vivid, to reflect how hard it was to preserve dyes from fading due to sunlight and wear. Elite units, however, often feature more intense and vibrant colors.
Regarding equipment, I did my best with vanilla models and what I could import from other Total War games. My goal was to stay as historically accurate as possible, while allowing for some liberties to highlight differences between unit types. I chose to represent the period from 420 to 480 AD, partly because most reskins focus either earlier or later, partly because that’s the period described in the base game, and finally because many in-game models actually belong to a very late (sometimes even medieval) era, for example, very limited Intercisa helmet variety 😢.”
This is my second mod, and I want it to be even more ambitious than the first, I hope you’ll enjoy it!
– What does the mod do?
Eventually, it will reskin units, generals, and leaders of all factions in the game. But for now it works in tandem with my other mod, Authentic Vanilla Reskin. For now, all land units have been reskinned. Some factions already have all their generals and naval units reskinned as well.
– Is the mod finished?
No.
– What is the mod compatible with?
Everything that doesn’t alter unit skins or faction colors.
Most importantly, it’s compatible with my previous mod and improves many models and uniforms, including a good number of helmets.
– Is the mod historically accurate?
Yes and no. I’ve done my best, but between the eccentric vanilla models and the lack of information on some cultures, some compromises had to be made.
In general, you can consider this mod more historical than something like Taste of Capitalism’s Grand Campaign, but less historical than Fireforged Empire.
Above all, I aimed for consistency and visual coherence.
– Can I use or modify this mod?
Of course!
However, unlike the previous mod, and given the huge amount of work involved, a link back to this mod would be appreciated.
