The Last Duel
This item is Rome II’s equivalent of Thrones’ The Last Duel.
Originally, Creative Assembly intended Rome II to feel raw, chaotic, and dishonourable – in stark contrast to Shogun 2’s formalised duels between individual fighters. In Rome II, every warrior was meant to fight opportunistically (e. g. stabbing an enemy in the back), creating a ‘meat-grinder’ effect (devs’ own words) rather than idealised staged one-on-one fights.
At launch, many players complained that Rome II’s brutality clashed with their mental image of disciplined Hellenistic soldiers. In response, the devs added a ‘formation attack’ toggle (on by default) and increased the likelihood of duel animations, though varying it depending on specific scenarios.
Many players missed the originally intended gritty atmosphere. Others simply hated how interruptive the long motion-captured animations are. When the devs dropped one-on-one duels entirely in Three Kingdoms, it fit perfectly – both historically and for smoother gameplay.
This item sets the chance of matched combat animations to zero in all scenarios. If you prefer tactics over spectacle, or find that visceral group combat is the spectacle this game needs – this item is a must-have.
