Neat Building [B42]
(SP / MP, Host / Dedicated tested on recent builds)
Neat Building is a cleaner, faster, and more practical replacement for the default Build menu in Project Zomboid Build 42.
It reorganizes building into clearer categories, adds better icons, stacks related recipes, includes practical filters, lets you switch between Neat UI and Vanilla UI whenever you want, and adds extra buildable constructions to expand the Build menu.
Dependency: NeatUI Framework must be enabled and placed before Neat Building in your mod load order.
This is not specific to Neat Building. Like many mods that add constructions, recipes, items, or placed world content, removing a mod from a world that has already used it can cause problems.
In single-player, removing Neat Building may still leave existing constructions in the world, but some mod-specific interactions may no longer be available (for example, some custom disassembly options).
⚠️In multiplayer servers, removing the mod from an existing world is more risky and may cause WorldDictionary issues that can prevent the server world from loading correctly.
- If you only want the vanilla Build menu back, you do not need to remove the mod
- You can switch UI mode from:
- ESC → Options → Mods → Neat Building
- Right-click (RMB) the Build sidebar button for a quick in-game toggle
- For active MP worlds/servers, the safest option is to keep the mod enabled once that world has already used it
- Always make a backup before removing any mod from an existing save or server
If you want build XP gain and source mod information to be displayed, try this addon:
Neat Crafting & Neat Building – XP & Mod Display
If the mod does not appear in your mod list, you are probably running Build 41.
This mod requires Build 42.
- Build 42 maintenance: updated across supported B42 versions, including recent compatibility work for B42.17 and B42.18
- Vanilla ↔ Neat UI toggle: persistent via Mod Options
- Quick in-game toggle: Right-click (RMB) the vanilla Build sidebar button
- Improved Filter Bar: more filters, cleaner layout, and compact min-size mode
- Translation support: updated for recent Build 42 translation loading changes
- Recent fixes: improved disassembly support, translated disassembly names, floor placement fixes, and recent B42 compatibility updates
You can keep the mod enabled and choose which interface you want to use:
- ESC → Options → Mods → Neat Building → Use Neat Building UI
- Quick toggle: Right-click (RMB) the vanilla Build sidebar button
Note: Left-click behavior is unchanged.

The interface is designed to stay compact, so you can keep a better view of the world while planning and placing structures.
- Collapsible window:
- The recipe details panel is only shown while hovering over it
- After double-clicking to build, the panel collapses and leaves only the category panel visible
- Moving the mouse back over the category panel reopens the recipe list
- Recipe stacking: similar or advanced-design recipes are grouped together, with the currently buildable one prioritized
- Transparent recipe info panel: gives you more visibility while building

- Better categories: buildings are grouped by type rather than by skill
- Clearer icons: missing icons are added so it is easier to understand each build at a glance
- More buildings: extra builds are included, and suggestions are welcome
The filter bar includes more useful options and a cleaner layout for faster browsing:
- Only Can Build
- Only Met Skill Requirements
- Only Known Recipes
- Min-size mode for a more compact panel
With the addon Neat Crafting & Neat Building – XP & Mod Display enabled, you can also filter recipes that award XP or come from mods.
The goal is simple: make building faster to browse, easier to understand, and less intrusive on screen.
You still keep the information you need, but in a cleaner and more efficient layout.
Gamepad support is not planned in the short term.
The current focus is finishing the UI redesign work first.
For now, this mod is mainly designed for mouse / keyboard play.
Known conflict:
- [B42] Buildables Expansion
- Rebalanced Prop Moving
Mods that modify the same Build panel files may also conflict depending on load order.
