A Giant Problem
A Level 1-16+ campaign inspired by the classic modules G1-2-3: Against the Giants (1978) by Gary Gygax.
The last few weeks have seen increasing goblin activity near the village of Neganburg and reports of hostile giants in the vicinity. To make matters worse, the leader of the town militia, Lucas Stormspear, mysteriously vanished from his home last night! With the militia fully occupied by the goblin threat, the town lacks the resources to investigate Lucas’ disappearance. Can you find the missing town militia leader and bring stability to the area?
- Level 1 characters will advance to level 16 (higher with UB mod, but does not require UB). The storyline is linear, with a focus on combat.
- The opening quest takes the players to approximately Level 7, then the Hill Giant quest begins. The main quest continues after the Fire Giants in a manner inspired (very loosely) by D1: Descent into the Depths of the Earth (1978) by Gary Gygax, and Q1: Queen of the Demonweb Pits (1980) by David Sutherland III and Gary Gygax.
- There are 55 unique locations, 38 custom magic weapons with descriptions, and 122 custom monsters.
- Be sure to actually read (using the game mechanics) any documents you find to advance the quests. On the PC, this is done by right-clicking the item and selecting "READ". You will need to know the language of the document (or use spells or magic items) to read the text. Magic items to assist reading languages are available throughout the campaign, but knowing Goblin, Giant, and Old Tirmarian languages will make things easier.
- In some cases, there may be consequences to leaving an area to long rest (i.e. you should not assume you can go into a monster stronghold, kill half the inhabitants, then leave and come back as if nothing happened). Consequences are more likely if the monster boss is still alive.
- As in the original modules, many of the encounters will be challenging. Recommend using the ‘max hp per level’ setting. A party with at least one "tank" with high armor class and a spell caster capable of casting area denial spells like spike growth, wall of fire, etc. will be helpful. The use of stealth to scout areas, setup ambushes, and use chokepoints is critical.
- There is a wide range of custom magic weapons to accommodate various styles (Bows, Crossbows, 1H+shield, 2H, Finesse), including some gauntlets for monks.
- A minimum of 4 party members is required to complete some puzzles in the main quest.
- Has been playtested solo (PC) and co-op (PC-XBox). I have tested with 4- and 6-character parties, with and without UB mod.
- Please let me know if you find any bugs.
