The Type 039A/B conventional submarine is the third-generation conventional submarine developed by China. It adopts a teardrop-shaped hull, new-generation vibration and noise reduction technologies, and advanced anechoic tiles, significantly enhancing its stealth and underwater maneuverability. The submarine is equipped with a digital integrated sonar system and a modern command and control system, capable of employing heavy torpedoes, submarine-launched anti-ship missiles, and other weapons. It possesses robust capabilities in underwater reconnaissance, sea control, and blue-water anti-submarine warfare. As a key component of the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s underwater combat branch, the Type 039A/B has evolved into multiple variants, achieving world-class performance among conventional submarines and effectively enhancing the navy’s comprehensive combat capabilities in both near-seas and far-seas operations.
The first Type 039A submarine entered service in 2006. Its hull design drew inspiration from the Russian Kilo-class(Project 877 and 636) submarines. The bow is equipped with six 533mm torpedo tubes, beneath which a large acoustic transducer array is installed. Large-aperture, low-frequency passive flank arrays are attached to the hull, providing long-range acoustic detection capabilities within the first and second convergence zones, providing fire control solutions for torpedo and missile attacks. The submarine has an endurance of over 5,000 nautical miles and is equipped with an air-independent propulsion(AIP) system based on Stirling engines, allowing it to cruise underwater for weeks without surfacing to recharge.
The first Type 039B submarine entered service in 2011. It features an improved sail design and is fully covered with new-generation anechoic tiles. The Type 039B incorporates enhanced noise reduction measures, achieving quieter acoustic performance than the Russian Improved Kilo-class(Project 636M) submarine. Its torpedo tubes and fire control system are compatible with China’s new-generation heavy torpedoes and submarine-launched hypersonic anti-ship missiles. Neither the Type 039A nor the Type 039B is equipped with a towed sonar array however.
