Description:
On their own, they don’t pose a significant threat, but ignore them and you may quickly find yourself overwhelmed

Chum arrives from the tides to ransack the lands of Aether! A simple yet highly volatile rushdown character, Chum is a close-quarters-oriented fighter who sports a solid set of quick normals to lay a smackdown on opponents up close and a set of aggressively oriented specials to create openings to get in. They’re also able to augment their speed through applying their gimmick to opponents, creating a maelstrom of pain for their enemies. However, Chum’s lacking range on attacks coupled with low weight and the fleeting status they rely on makes them forced to take heavy risks to get their gameplan going and requires good awareness to keep their win condition online. Are you willing to join in on the carnage of a Salmon Run? Then Chum just may be the crazed fish for you

Gimmick: Glowfly Rush

Glowflies. That explains why the Salmonids are restless. If you start glowing…well, good luck.
Landing Chum’s special moves will generate Glowflies around the opponent. While they are active, Chum gains a drastic movement speed buff, enabling him to play aggressively and keep up offensive pressure far more effectively than he would otherwise. This buff also effects other Chums on the field who weren’t directly affected by Glowflies themselves, resulting in absolute chaos in free for alls or team battles. However, the status effect goes away whenever Chum is hit with a physical attack or parried, so be careful.

Special Moves
Nspecial – Smallfry Launch

The Smallfry might be weak, but they’re very fast. Ignore them, and you may quickly be overwhelmed.
Chum smacks a Smallfry towards the opponent, latching onto enemies if they hit their mark. A fast projectile attack that applies a damage over time effect on hit before spawning Glowflies on the opponent. A useful ranged pressure tool that can let you get up Glowflies in neutral or in combos due to the initial hit as they bap the Smallfry away. Chum can only fire off one Smallfry at a time and is unable to throw another one once they’re attached to the opponent. Hitting Chum with a physical attack will also clear off the Smallfry, so do be mindful not to get hit while they’re up.

Fspecial – Scrapper Charge

The Scrapper’s vehicle is a much-desired item for many Salmonids. The shields are made from odds and ends of scrap metal.
Chum climbs into a Scrapper vehicle and then bursts forward using its Ink Propulsion system. A fast traveling burst movement special that bounces off opponents on hit while applying Glowflies. Sports a solidly strong early hit and a weaker late hit, making it a very solid finisher option off stage. It also doesn’t put Chum into Pratfall, though it does have quite a lot of endlag to compensate for the versatility.

Dspecial – Flipper Flopper Ride

It swims below the ink, then launches high into the air before diving back down.
Chum grabs onto a Flipper Flopper and then takes a ride as it leaps in the air in an arc. A versatile arcing movement special that, similar to Fspecial, bounces off opponents while applying Glowflies. Sports a weaker initial hit as the Flipper Flopper ascends and a stronger spike hit as it descends, both of which enabling combos due to the weaker bounce off on hit. Chum can also cancel out of the attack after diving for enough time into a jump, airdodge, or Uspecial for added safety, though do be wary of the increased hurtbox size on this attack.

Uspecial – Emergency Exit

The ranks of the Drizzlers are made up by renegade Salmonid who prefer to go it alone and fight on their own terms.
Chum pulls out an armored umbrella and then launches into the air before opening it and slowly drifting down. A fast vertical recovery special that is very reminiscent of a certain princess, useful for making it back to stage or as a risky finisher off the top of the stage. Just like the other specials, this move applies Glowflies on hit. Pressing down or parry during the float will cancel it into Pratfall, though Chum cannot reopen it once they disembark.

Other notable moves

To save on weight, the craft has no weapons. This is why it attacks by trying to smash enemies beneath it.
Chum’s Dstrong, Slammin’ Lid Slam, is a slow yet highly evasive strong attack that has Chum get in a Slammin’ Lid craft and slam down with it. This attack raises Chum’s hurtbox significantly upwards during startup, enabling them to avoid most ground-oriented attacks cleanly before coming down with a big slam. This move also destroys projectiles below the craft as you charge the move, letting you block ranged attacks for teammates if you want. Be wary of vertical attacks though, as those can usually catch Chum if they try to use it carelessly.

The larger Cohock moves slowly but packs a real punch with direct, strong attacks.
Chum’s Ustrong, Cohock Clobber, is a 3 hit Ustrong that comes out fairly fast and packs a solid punch off the top due to a Cohock coming in to assist. The Cohock will be replaced by a Mudmouth if you use Ustrong with limited ground space behind or in front of Chum, though this is only cosmetic.

Chum was a character I made over the span of 2 weeks for an ill-fated Halloween release. I hope you all enjoy this manic salmonid as much as I did making them!
